Paper Assignment Two: Analyzing Social Lives Using the Concepts of Marianne Weber & W.E.B. DuBois

Use the major ideas/themes and concepts of W.E.B DuBois and Marianne Weber ( at least four concepts total and two from each) to critically and sociologically analyze  one of the following films. These films represent various combinations of intersectionality race/class/gender/sexuality.

In your analysis:

a. identify and discuss the important issues/themes  surrounding race, gender and/or sexuality and the social, macro-social/cultural and /or interactional contexts of the film and its main character/s. Connect the issues to the foci of Weber and DuBois’s work and express how and why their theories are relevant to understanding these themes/issues.

b. employ at least four concepts  that help explain and/or provide depth and greater understanding to the actions/behavior of one of the main film character/s and situations/dilemmas presented in the film. Explain and even when needed define the concepts and connect them directly to the character’s behaviors, situations, and or interactions where the concept is demonstrated in the film. Detail is important here- in establishing the concept’s depth and applicability to understanding the context and the character.

Be clear about the circumstances/context and the social world in which the character is embedded. Again,  use detail in describing the social / cultural context by using film information, scenes, conversations and historical information, even bring in outside research where helpful to illuminate the situation the character is in.

a. apply/relate the film and concepts  in some way  to your experience/life or current issue—are the themes/issues in the film (still) relevant – is there stretch/applicability for here and now? Based on what you chose to emphasize in your paper, discuss how these issues, aspects of social life, are and/or are not still relevant today, as played out in your life and/or in political/public discourse. What would Marianne Weber and WEB DuBois have to say about the state of race/gender/sexualities (intersectionality) politics in our historical moment.

d. bring in at least  three outside sources (not including your course readings)  to support the issues and the analysis (these need to be solid, relevant sources—academic journal articles or chapters, reputable well researched periodical articles, well researched news or magazine articles and also you can include data from reputable reports, government documents, or other studies). Also, use your textbook and readings to provide deeper meaning to your paper, you might consider quoting at least once from each theorist to demonstrate a point—as this is a fantastic way to illuminate their utility and poignancy for interpreting social and cultural life.

You must double space the paper, turn it in online and a hard copy, use APA citation style for citing in text and referencing at the end of the paper.
