Paper Assignment: You will watch the video in which you are in the counselor role. You will then write a 6-8 page (double-spaced) paper in which you discuss your performance as the counselor. Your paper should be based on the following outline:

1. Begin with a brief (1 paragraph) summary of your client. (5 points)

· Describe who your client is and the issue that for which they were seeking help.

· Include any other basic background information you discovered during the interview.

2. 1-2 pages highlighting all the skills from the list below that you demonstrated in your interview. Provide a short transcript of one example of each skill and describe why you used that skill at that time. List of skills: Open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, reflection, reflection of feeling, clarification, silence(/if used), summarization, identification of cognitive messages, identification of affective messages. (10 points)

· Example:

Client: I don’t know what to do about my roommates. I am so angry with one of them I can’t even look at her.

Counselor: You are only angry with one of your roommates, is that correct? (I asked this question to clarify her comment of plural for roommates but then stated very angry with one of them)

OR

Counselor: [Silence] (I used silence to give her time to say more about her anger towards her roommate)

3. Describe what you did well and why you think you did those things well. What are your strengths as a counselor? (1/2 - 1 page) (5 points)

4. Describe what you think you could still improve upon. What do you wish you had done differently in your interview? What did you notice when you watched your video that you did not notice during the taping? (1/2 - 1 page) (5 points)

5. Compare and contrast your performance on videos 1, 2, and 3. What do you notice about that was consistent? What did you notice that changed? (1/2 - 1 page) (10 points)

6. What did you learn from this assignment and what did you learn about yourself from taking this class. There are NO right or wrong answers here. Be honest – don’t just say what you think I want to hear. (1/2 - 1 page)

Additional Notes

· Paper should be written in paragraph form, with the exception of Section #2 (skills identification) where you will provide transcripts and then identify and describe the skill.

· Overall quality (quality of writing, grammar, spelling, & punctuation) is worth 15 points.
