Paper #2 Worksheet

This worksheet is designed to help you get started on Paper #2. You may ultimately change your codes and/or the ethical theories you originally use on this worksheet but keep in mind feedback will be provided based on this this submission and should be taken into consideration even if you change components later.

1. Describe your future career objective. If you want to own a business, please describe the type of business.

My career objective is to secure a job with a reputable organization to apply the skills I have learned in class. My father is an accountant in one of the famous finance companies in China. Therefore, I have always looked up to what he does and developed an interest in becoming an accountant.

2. Create and briefly explain the code of conduct you are creating for yourself in this future career or the code of conduct for the company you intend to own and run (should be approx. 5-10 codes with a brief explanation):

1. Plagiarism: incase I use anyone else’s work in my reports I will always give them credit for their efforts.

2. Bribes: I will not accept bribes from anyone for instance they want me to give them confidential information concerning someone else’s financial status.

3. Be punctual: I will always arrive at work thirty minutes earlier because I’d arrive earlier than be late.

4. Use of Technology: even though individuals live in a world of technological advancements where they find themselves using electronic devices most of the time, in my future career as an accountant I intend to use technology such as cellphone only when I’m on a break. Even though staying away from social media might not be easy since I will be working on the computer, I will have to be self-disciplined and only concentrate on work when I have access to the internet.

5. Dress Code: Accountancy is a formal profession therefore my dress code will be official wear most days.

6. Absenteeism: This is a career that I am looking forward to getting into therefore I will not be absent from work unless I have a valid reason for not reporting to work.

7. Discrimination: in a workplace, everyone deserves to be treated equally regardless of their background therefore I will not discriminate against any of my colleagues

3. Which ethical theory categories do the codes in #2 above fall into (please discuss 3)? Remember you do not have to relate every code to every ethical theory you chose. However, you should relate/apply each code to at least one of these ethical theories listed in a, b and c below so that at the end of the paper, you have applied each code to at least one ethical theory once. You may pick from:

Hedonism

Desire Satisfaction Theory

Divine Command Theory

Natural Law Theory

Ethical Egoism

(NOT Psychological Egoism)

Consequentialism or

Utilitarianism

Kantian Ethics

Virtue Ethics

Social Contract Theory

Ethical Relativism (can include

Cultural Relativism)

1st Ethical Theory: _______ Divine Command Theory___________________________

i. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here:_____________

ii. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:

Two codes of conduct related to this theory include not discriminating against others and refusing to accept bribes. According to God’s teaching, accepting bribes means an individual is taking what does not rightfully belong to them; therefore, that is against God’s command. Additionally, all human beings are equal before God, regardless of their background; thus, discriminating against my colleagues and clients would be against God’s command.

2nd Ethical Theory: Natural Law Theory__________________________________

iii. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here:______________

iv. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:

The codes of conduct that apply to this theory include plagiarism, confidentiality, and the use of technology. For instance, I should know that plagiarizing someone else’s work is not morally right. My gut tells me that if someone else did the same thing to me, I would feel offended, given the effort I usually put into everything I do. Issues concerning finances are very personal; therefore, if a client opens to me and tells me about the financial information, I should keep that information to myself because the client and I are the only parties who should know about that kind of information. Regarding the use of technology, a saying state, “do the right thing at the right time.” Scrolling through social media when I am supposed to be working is not the right thing; therefore, I will ensure I always work when I am supposed to be working and rest when I’m supposed to be working so that these two things do not collide with each other thereby interrupting my schedule.

3rd Ethical Theory: __ Social Contract Theory________________________________

v. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here: _____________

vi. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:

This theory applies to my code of ethics, such as dress code, punctuality, and absenteeism. As I mentioned before, my father has been my role model in my journey to one day becoming an accountant. I have always seen his dress formally when going to work and waking up early to be at work on time. Additionally, he rarely fails to go to work unless she has a valid reason. These are things I have seen happen not only in him but also in the people I know that have jobs. I have therefore grown up knowing that is what society expects me to do.

Comments

Let's refer to the number associated with the code when you discuss it in the ethical theory sections. EX. Divine Command Theory you would also include "code 7" and "code 2".

Overall, will have to dive deeper into each ethical theory to elevate your application.
