Comparing Relationships
Relationships are build based on very different aspects, and thus it is important to ensure
that there are better elements in place to realize such. Where it is possible to have a greater level
of focus when interacting with different individuals, relationship building elements come second
to nothing else. It is important to develop positive focus based on how different individuals are
engaged. It is possible to achieve increased focus based on the underlying elements that are
discussed. The short stories that are discussed in this case are The Lie and The Eye of the Night.
These stories advance different issues where it is essential important to understand the existing
diversity where it is possible to have high-level commitment on the underlying issues that are
discussed. Communication is essential in interaction between individuals regardless of their
position and mastery of the language. As such, communication forms the basis under which the
relationships of the characters in the two books are evaluated.
Communication in these stories has been developed differently where it is possible to
identify some of important elements that need to be considered in order to have a very effective
communication. The Eye of the Night Story provides focus on explores poor communication skill
between Jorge and his fiancée who is the narrator in this case. There have been many incidences,

which have been identified in this case illustrating the existing communication breakdown where
the narrator prefers staying out at night gazing at the stars while Jorge is inside sleeping (Boyle,
1). The exists different interests in this case where they are unable to have a greater level of
understanding where it is possible to understand important communication elements which play
an integral role in shaping the interaction between the narrator and Jorge. The story of Jorge and
his fiancé is a surefire way of telling that all capacities of human relationships require good
communication. Open communication channels should exist between us and our friends, our
families, and our professional relations. On the whole, communication fosters good relationships
between people in social settings, professional settings, and political settings.
The situation is very different when considering the lie where Lonnie despite having
finished his leave days, struggles to inform his boss about his inability to go to work since he has
a very genuine reason because his child is sick but fears the response from his boss since there is
a likelihood that they think that he is lying. He struggles to express himself despite being truthful
about his situation. His boss tries to guess common excuses that Lonnie might be trying to use so
that he can be extended holiday. It is very difficult to understand each without having a common
focus on issues that are being discussed. Therefore, the communication aspects that have been
developed in this case aim at achieving a very effective communication between individuals who
are interacting with each other (Suarez). From the story of Lonnie, we get to see that when a
good communication rapport is established beforehand between two individuals, doubts and
suspicion are warded off, and any subsequent passing and receiving of messages becomes easy
and stress free.
The inability to have a positive focus on important communication aspects have created a
very difficult environment where the narrator is having a negative attitude towards Jorge and the

whole relationship since she believes that they are not compatible. However, she does not make
any efforts to make her feelings known. She claims that "I always wonder what other people
think about when they are sitting quietly, smoking by themselves. Jorge never does things like
that; we're together at night, only at night. We talk a bit, he tells me stuff, he says he's tired and
bored, I listen to him” (Boyle, 2). This statement highlight hat Jorge is insensitive to the feelings
of the narrator and all he wants is to satisfy his physical needs.
The narrator in the eye of the night provides focus on important elements and places
where it is possible to understand important elements, which are crucial in defining the existing
relationship. She understands her fiancée in a very different way through an analysis of his
challenges. He has failed to understand what she really likes, and thus she is unable to
understand how he does not have a clear understanding ofn the underlying communication
process. Jorge does not understand what fascinates his fiancée at night and thus he would prefer
having her sleep next to him in bed. The narrator highlights that she has effectively understood
how Jorge communicates and that he is not straightforward in communicating (Boyle, 3). This
story clearly shows that these two people are mistaken in the relationship. Instead of
communicating and finding out each other’s preferences, they have resorted to making
assumptions. The assumptions made are not healthy and have already broken them. In other
words, the lack of communication has made the two people in the relationship to drift apart even
though they are living together.
The lie provides emphasis on the efforts that are put in place by the narrator to ensure that
everyone around him understands exactly what is going on even though there exist doubts
especially at his place of work. When he communicates with his boss about the death of the
child, he understands the backlash from his boss. He asserts that "And when Radko answered,

the deepest consonant-battering pall of suspicion lodged somewhere between his glottis and
adenoids, I couldn’t help myself.” He understands that his boss Radko might be suspicious about
the whole situation but he tries to make the communication as short as possible in order to avoid
any additional suspicious, which might get him exposed (Suarez).
Communication, based on these two short stories, has provided a better understanding
where it is possible to have understand the level of engagement among different individual based
on how they are able to interact with each other. The different settings highlighted in this case
emphasis on the need to explore key communication aspects, which are essential in ensuring that
there is successful communication process where individuals engaged can understand each other
effectively.
Commented [BW16]: You mentioned this in the other paragraph that discusses this short story. You need to be
focusing on the relationship between Lonnie and Clover.
Commented [BW17]: Again—you are mixing up the authors.
