Decision Making- Dialogue
This dialogue has been written to present the discussion of two philosophers on the topic of decision making to present their opinion for the decision making based on their philosophies and perspectives. Decision making is known as the cognitive process in the perspective of the psychology that is to choose an action as an option by considering many other alternative options for a certain action. It is known as the final option made by the subject regarding a certain purpose and may or may not prompt the action.
Plato: Reason is an important aspect that takes an individual towards pure knowledge. Pure knowledge is essential to direct the path towards the right direction leading towards happiness. Hence it is essential to importance to the reason as it opens up the direction towards the right direction of action. This means that other options that are present in the world such as our impressions, beliefs, emotions and different types of people perspectives in the form of option are all the type of a reality that exists outside, it never direct an individual to the right direct but only reason can (Anderson et al., 2018). In crux, the rational thought is very important to take the decisions of life regardless of the emotions and senses only based on the rational thinking that can help to take the decisions and judgements. It is the historically important perspective that has an important to focus on rational thinking and excluding the emotions and reason.
Locke: Human nature is based on the reason and tolerance; hence the influence of the human decision making is based on the reason. Human nature is more concerned with the self-independence regarding taking the decisions that are relevant to one's own need and desire. The idea of decision making is related to the liberalism and the ability to adjust with the liberal attitude of independence and freedom.
The role of emotions and the introspection cannot be ignored while taking the decisions as the information that is taken out of the environment also come with observation and introspection and it provides the direction to take the important decisions. Knowledge is innate and is based on the truth it does exist in ourselves, but we make the decisions when we have experience of the external world, and our senses are involved in taking important decisions that we are able to make the best decision in our life. Hence all the decisions that a person make are based on the knowledge that he would get by the experience and the use of his senses.
Plato: Decision making is based on the reason and rational thinking is related to the real “intellectual realm” that is not related to the dependence of the senses, as it purely results from the pure thought that has originated from the reasoning and thinking apart from the external experiences that are not pure such as emotions and others human experiences.
Locke: Decision making is based on rational thinking, but it is not the individual duty to make decisions, the duty of the decision making is imparted to all members of the society. A single decision is only beneficial for the personal good ignoring the rights of all those who are living in the surroundings. The responsibility of the correct and reason based decision making needs a global impact on the society by rational thinking to bring the change in the lives; single decisions cannot impact or pay help to all members of the society.
Plato: Reason has the tendency to rule the world as it is related to the intellect and wisdom; hence it has the right to making the ruling decisions in life. Those decisions that are focused on the reason are supported by the spirit of the human and hence supports and obeys the decisions that are made on the basis of reasonable thinking (Handy & Russell, 2018).
All the other things that exist in the world apart from the reason are the distractions, and these things have no significant role as they distract the person from approaching the pure thoughts that are needed to be assessed. All the artistic approach of human such as poetry, passion and the emotions everything will be meaningless for human if his assessment is not based on the reason and pure knowledge.
Locke: Social responsibility of decision making is high on the public, as everyone has the equal right to take the decision and hence has the equal responsibility to make effective and reasonable decisions for the mutual benefit of the society. Giving the equal right to every member of society on the basis of equality brings the people together to share the responsibility of the decision making rather than looking toward a one person for taking decision for them. Giving rights to the society to seek rational decisions for themselves gives them the freedom and independence to think with freedom and take the initiative for the social and collective good (Wong et al., 2018).
Plato: Rational thoughts are the only and ultimate way of living a happy life as the directions are based on the knowledge based life originating from the pure knowledge, anything else that has not originated from the pure knowledge cannot help a man to live happy and blessed life but pure knowledge. Emotions cannot help a person to take the right decision and make correct judgements hence it is very important to observe the things in the light of reason and rational thinking that does not distract the individual from being successful by making right decisions in the life.
Locke: Success in living is only hidden in equality basis responsibility of decision making in all the society, excluding people from the responsibility does not have a positive impact on the whole society, hence the political influence over the public is not right by depriving the people form their basic right of independence and taking the rational decisions for the betterment of the society.
Plato: Truth is the ultimate way of living this life, everything else is not important to hold the significance in the life, all the other processes hold the element of distrust in themselves but the pure knowledge is always supported towards the right and correct directions in the life to take big initiatives and hence are important.
Locke: Human has the inborn tendency of having ideas and knowledge, as a new born baby also have many ideas but these ideas are accomplished by using the knowledge of the senses and experience that a child learns from the society and its surroundings. There are certain ideas that are based on the universal understandings, but these ideas are excelled by the experience and knowledge that is gathered by the senses of the human hence the notion cannot be ignored that the role of our world knowledge helps us to think about the taking the important decisions in the life.
Plato: Argument is an important dimension of the seeking the truth when arguments help to find out the right direction leading towards the truth than arguments are a valid direction to screen out what is right and what is wrong. The true knowledge is explored by the justified arguments. When arguments are only made to win the discussion not to seek out the correct and right knowledge than results are only based on the purpose of winning the argument not on seeking the truth than the authenticity of the argument not valid and supportive for the purpose of the knowledge but to only win the argument. Truth cannot approach with this type of attitude.
An opposing argument is presented that each human has his own perception of finding the intuition regarding right decision making. When intuition is used with the intention of finding the right direction of the decision it helps the person to put all the reasoning and judgment to come together and find out what is right and what is wrong hence the person becomes able to sort out the right direction of the decision.
The point of view of moral psychology also supports the point of view of ignition and emotion that can help and support decision making. Moreover, the emotion has an important role and influence in directing the decision making that gut feeling or intuition influences the decisions that are made by us. The role of truth and pure knowledge base don the reasoning is not supported by many psychologists who are following the perspective of moral psychology.
Locke: Social aspect of the society cannot be ignored, knowledge is learned through observation and experience of the senses although innate knowledge is present the experience is limited. The knowledge opens up its direction by exploring the world through the use of sense and having new experiences whether they are good or bad.
Innate knowledge does, but it can be excelled by the experience of the world. Those decisions which are taken in the individual level cannot play a part in the social effectiveness towards the society whereas those decisions which are helpful for the collective decisions of the society are helpful in the collective benefit (Locke, 2018).
If the social need for decision making is kept in the view, the role of social influence is important and not ignorable on decision making. The social choice is based on the rule that the majority has more influence as compared to individual decision making. The intention of influencing the majority is a matter of concern on the broader range for the society as the influence of the governmental decision on the society without their consent are not influential but when overall society has the duty regarding decision making than the influence has a greater impact.
Plato: Furthermore if the moral psychology is the central notion of everything are we slave of the emotions, when brain will attract us by the influences of the external world and would tend us to influence our decisions in the direction of the emotions or intuition based knowledge without focusing on the reason based knowledge it is important to consider and think what would be the consequences that would be available for us.
Emotions are not reason based they have the biological reasons from inside that triggers the emotions and let them prevail on the decision making tendency. Here question arises whether engage in rational reasoning is more effective in taking the effective decision point the society and business or moral reasoning would support the reasons and issues.
Workplace and the other settings in the society seek for rational thinking to take the success oriented decisions whether taking the decisions that are illogical and not based on the rationalized thoughts. Business in the current world is based on rationalized decisions not on the moral reasons as the business environment has the influence of the political influence; hence the position of the business becomes vulnerable to moral reasoning.
Recommendations
· Firstly the importance of the reasoning is highlighted by the Plato, in the decisions making. Those decisions that are based on the reasoning are important and logic oriented rather than distractions. Reasoning justifies a position in decision making.
· The reasoning is the cognitive phenomena that focus on the reasoning and logic oriented decisions, these are the highly complex phenomena’s that involves the reasoning to approach the knowledge.
· Emotions based decisions are not practical; hence the approach is not applicable for the practical fields of life where the reasoning is necessary to make the decisions based on the logic.
· Reasoning provides the pros and cons of a situation to choose the best possible solution for an issue whereas emotional decision making can result in loss based on an influence towards a situation due to some external environmental factors.
· The point of view of the Plato is in favor of the logical reasoning is evident in decision making based on the true knowledge hence it is important to make decision based on the knowledge that is true and has authentic reasons whereas Locke has justified the need of the external environmental influence, and experience to make the decisions. This aspect is not very much applicable while making the decisions of the business.
· Cognitive thinking based reasoning has been very influential in terms of social or political decisions as the arguments based on the logical reason are valid and provide authentic reasons to take the actions.
· Valid and logically reasoning provides the base to convince others on an opinion that is focused on the logic and reasons avoids the stress and tension that is involved in decision making as the satisfaction is based on the logic.
· The decisions that are based on the mutual consent needs solid and logical same grounds to bring everyone on the same page; logical decisions would be helpful for everyone to understand the reasons rather than making emotional decisions.
· Cognitive decisions enhance professional development and improve the authentic grounds among the people regarding decision making.
· Emotional decisions are spontaneous and have drawbacks that might influence the reason and logic of decision hence resulting in the impact in the business and the other societal decisions where collective decisions are not influenced.
· Logic oriented decisions are less prone to the mistakes and a fewer option of the decision being wrong because decisions are made upon the basis of authentic reason by considering the aspects of in favor and against.
· The cognitive process that is involved in the higher order functioning based on decision making is a mental process that needs to consider all the possibility while making decision, the role of emotions and senses along with the experience cannot be ignored while taking important decisions hence the both aspects are important while taking decision that have been highlighted by the Plato and the John Locke.
· Both presentable options that have been given by the Plato's and Locke have their own reasons and, but the aspects but the reasons behind the decision making are important while making decisions.
· Experience of life is important in making the decision that is more applicable in the practicality of life. Reality based situation need authentic and logical reasons that are not emotional.
In conclusion, the perspective that has been presented by Locke and Plato have highlighted the importance of decision making as logic and reason are significant along with the emotional and sensory experiences. Social decisions are beneficial when the responsibility is shared in society rather than taking benefit of the single individual benefit.
