Response Paper #2: Enlightenment Ways of Thinking Remember the recommendations for completing response papers:
1. Read each step of the assignment carefully and be sure to complete the bullet points for each step.
2. Complete each bullet point with detailed explanations. Don’t just list information quickly. Show your mind working by providing explanations which prove you studied and understood the details of the lectures.
3. Don’t copy my sentences. Don’t use my sentences with just a few word changes. Write your own sentences. You may use words, phrases, and concepts from the lectures. But the sentences should be your own. That means your sentences should clearly be distinct from mine – in order to show your mind working.
4. Re-read your writing before submitting your work. Look for mistakes and unclear sentences to fix. The more time you invest in your writing, the more your writing will express your intelligence.
Here’s the assignment for Response Paper #2: Write an essay completing the three steps below. Make sure your essay is based exclusively on studying the assigned lectures in the “Enlightenment” folder. Do not use the Internet or other sources. 1) Write a paragraph or two discussing Classical Liberalism. In your discussion, identify two classical
liberal authors with dates. Be sure to explain
• the classical liberal view of human nature and civil liberty
• the classical liberal view of democracy and a constitutional republic
• the classical liberal view of progress. Consider whether progress includes equality or inequality. o Base your discussion exclusively on the lecture “Four Versions part 2.” That means do not use the
Internet or other sources. Focus on the assigned lecture. Show that you studied this lecture. 2) Write a paragraph or two discussing Radical Liberalism. In your discussion, identify a radical liberal
author with dates. Be sure to explain
• the radical liberal view of human nature
• the radical liberal view of progress
• And compare the radical liberal view of progress with the conservative liberal view of progress.
Helpful hint: Consider how Burke and Paine reacted differently to the events of the French
Revolution in 1789. Making comparisons is a good way to develop your writing. Use sentences like
“Similar to X, Y also states….” or “Unlike X, Y argues…”
o Base your discussion exclusively on the lecture “Four Versions part 3” (you can also review Four Versions part 1). That means do not use the Internet or other sources. Focus on the assigned lecture. Show that you studied this lecture.
3) Write a paragraph or two discussing Radical Communitarianism. In your discussion, identify a radical
communitarian author with dates. Be sure to
• explain the radical communitarian view of progress
• compare the radical communitarian view of progress with the classical liberal view of progress. Consider how Rousseau and Madison think very differently about individual rights and private pursuits.

o Base your discussion exclusively on the lecture “Four Versions part 4.” That means do not use the Internet or other sources. Focus on the assigned lecture. Show that you studied this lecture.
