Significant Ethical Issue#1
Paper #1 Worksheet
This worksheet is designed to help you get started on Paper #1. You may ultimately change your topic and/or the ethical theories you originally use on this worksheet but keep in mind feedback will be provided based on this submission and should be taken into consideration even if you change topics or theories later.
1. Identify 1 major ethical issue in your field that you would like to analyze (the area you intend to work in upon graduation)? Make sure it is a controversial topic and/or there is an ethical dilemma involved. Please describe briefly.
Professional responsibilities may conflict with company requirements. For example, when the company assigns specific work tasks and offers generous rewards, the sales staff may promote high-risk fund investments to the elderly or those who do not know how to obtain satisfactory performance. But this is not a requirement of the company. A selfish salesperson will respond to the company's reward request by choosing the one that has the highest return for them.
2. Whose rights, needs, desires, views are being represented in the current debate of this issue?
To meet the needs of sales staff and meet their performance of the company's desire to reward. It damages the interests and rights of investors and damages the company's reputation.
3. Which ethical theory categories do these rights, needs, desires or views fall into? Pick 3 ethical theories. You can use Pp 2a and the Shafer-Landau book to help you get an overview of these theories. You may pick from (do not deviate from this list without permission):
· Hedonism
· Desire Satisfaction Theory
· Divine Command Theory
· Natural Law Theory
· Ethical Egoism (NOT Psychological Egoism)
· Consequentialism OR Utilitarianism (not both)
· Kantian Ethics (not deontology)
· Virtue Ethics
· Social Contract Theory
· Ethical Relativism or Cultural Relativism (not both)
a. 1st Ethical Theory: ________ Desire Satisfaction Theory__________________________
i. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to your topic identified in #1 above:
The theory itself implies that satisfying our actual informed desire is necessary and sufficient to improve our welfare. Satisfy your need for rewards by selling high-risk products.
b. 2nd Ethical Theory: ________ Ethical Egoism __________________________
i. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to your topic identified in #1 above:
This ethical theory states that moral decisions should be guided solely by self-interest to maximize their interests to the detriment of the rights and interests of others.
· 3rd Ethical Theory: ______________ Hedonism____________________
ii. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to your topic identified in #1 above:
This ethical theory states that all human behavior is ultimately driven by the desire for pleasure and the avoidance of pain. Being a good employee with good results brings endless happiness and the desire to escape punishment for unfinished tasks.

These all sound fine but I'd like to challenge you a bit because you have picked 3 very similar theories. Perhaps you could swap 1-2 with others to create depth and to have some variety. Kantian Ethics and its principle of humanity (basically not using people) would work nicely for this one! Virtue Ethics is also interesting! Let's mix it up a bit! |
