It is important to be a critical reader of the statistics you encounter. Find an article in the popular media that uses statistics and submit a 2.5 – 3 page written critique that meets the following requirements:
· Your article can come from an online or print source, but should not just be some blogger's ramblings, rants or unsubstantiated opinions (do not use Wikipedia entries). The article must meet the following requirements:
· Have some spatial component.
· Be less than one year old.
· Use statistics as a major component of the piece.
· Your critique must , at a minimum, answer the following questions:
· Who wrote the article and where was it published?
· What is the author(s) goal for the article?
· What are the data used and what are its source(s)?
· What is the role of space in the article?
· What specific statistics are used?
· Does the author achieve his/her goal?
· Does the author use statistics effectively?
· What would you add to this article to improve it?
· What is your overall opinion of the article?
· You must submit a paper, not just a list of answers to the above questions. Paper format is as follows:
· Cover page containing: your name, course number, title, date, etc.
· 2.5 – 3 page written summary and critique. 1” margins, 1.5 spacing and 12 pt. font. No figures, tables, graphics, etc.
