Impacts of Brief Palliative Care

Palliative Care

Introduction

According to (WHO 2020), the global necessity of palliative care will rise due to the increased growth rates for chronic illnesses. It equips nurses with skills to minimize pain and suffering to patients suffering from a serious illness. Lack of knowledge on pain management results in much suffering to the patients and the healthcare system, not achieving the goal of providing quality services (Pieters, 2019).

Purpose

The study's major purpose is to assess whether palliative care nursing education can better nurses' skills-based in hospitals when briefly delivered.

Study type

This quantitative type employed a cross-sectional research design in collecting data using pretest and posttest. Data was collected using a paper-pencil survey method, considering nurses are mostly busy. The study employed an excel sheet, and SPSS version 24 was used to analyze it. The uses of a paired t-test portrayed the difference between pretest results and posttest results.

Findings

83.5% of the selected 73 nurses participated, and 65.6% of the participants lacked any experience in palliative care, while 59% did not know it at all. Pretest and posttest helped to acquire responses from different participants. Seven out of 20 questions showed remarkable additional knowledge. Posttest revealed that nurses had already improved, especially in handling aggressive treatments. 96.7% of the nurses were educated that treatments causing respiratory problems are effective at the early stage of severe dyspnea.

It was clear that during the pretest, 64% of the participants did not understand that public display of pain from chronic diseases is different from that of acute illnesses. The study shows that 88.5% of the nurses were well equipped with this important information after the brief education. The participants also became aware of using placebos in managing chronic pains.

Recommendation

Palliative care education is a vital element of treatment that should be made mandatory for every nurse. Inclusion of education as part of the education system to nursing universities and colleges can help nurses achieve sufficient education. This will enable every student to be well equipped with the skills before they graduate, hence empowering many nurses.

Conclusion

Using a paired t-test to show the difference between the pretest and posttest findings clearly showed a statistically significant improvement in hospital-based nurses' know-how on palliative care skills. The results also revealed that Palliative care education boosts the confidence of nurses in handling chronic pains, which therefore enhances reliability (Bollog, 2019)
