1. Review the “Case: Johnson & Johnson and the Tylenol Murders” found on page 90 of the Crisis Communications text. Summarize the case and POST ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD in at least 100 words. If you cite an outside source for your review, use APA format. (Outside sources are NOT required to be a scholarly, however you must provide the article’s citation in the discussion board post.)

2. Respond to two other student posts with your opinion of their posts in 50 words for each. Responses such as, “I agree” or “good idea” are not acceptable and will receive no credit. The response must add to the scholarly dialogue presenting the reasons for your opinion and supporting documentation cited.

Here are the 2 peers:

Meg- The case about the company Johnson and Johnson involved several people dying after taking their product extra strength Tylenol. There was a lot of early speculation on how their product was killing people until they determined it had been laced with cyanide. As soon as the CEO and other leaders of the company heard of what was happening, they immediately assembled a crisis team to address the media and the situation. Foster, who was in charge of the headquarters, had the reputation of being honest and trustworthy. He was able to divert several newspaper articles about cyanide being in the production plant. Ultimately, it did come out but they believed him when he stated that the amount there could not have been enough to hurt anyone. They discovered that someone had put the cyanide in these bottles. They recalled all Tylenol, and a few weeks later came out with a new packaging design. It had three layers of protection so people could see if theirs had been tampered with. Johnson and Johnson was able to regain their reputation for being a trusted company because of the steps they took throughout this crisis. They offered $100,000 for a reward to finding this person, but they have never been found.

Gre-The Case: Johnson & Johnson and the Tylenol Murders is a prime example of why it is important to have a positive relationship with the media. This crisis was a potential nightmare, individuals dying after using your product. The deaths occurred rapidly and no one initially had any idea how the poison was introduced into the product. Lawrence Foster even made a significant misstep and indicated that there was no cyanide in the manufacturing plants. This was Foster speaking before having all the facts and could have resulted in catastrophic repercussions to public opinion. However because he had a positive relationship with the media, the damage was minimized. Foster’s positive reputation translated into positive public opinion for the company. I think it’s important to note that prior to working for Johnson & Johnson, Foster was a newspaper editor. (Gorsky 2019). Many Public relations specialists are former journalists, but Johnson & Johnson used this to their advantage. They took his role seriously by making him a vice-president with the authority to actual represent the company. Many companies fail during crisis, despite the fact they have public relations specialists. However their roles are often minimized by CEOs, that can cause unintended additional damage.
