Successful Online Learner

INITIAL POST

Online learning made for the working students still requires effort. While you do not have to go to actual class physically your participation is still required. In my opinion, online classes are harder for someone like me who requires face-to-face time. I love sitting in a classroom and learning. I have discovered that online learning does open you to various people of different cultures, languages, and backgrounds. The result is an engaging and vibrant exchange of ideas, opinions, perspectives, and experience. (Online Learning, 2018) To be successful there are some strategies that help facilitate success. Planning is the most important. Planning is organization. In every online class that I have took I was advised to print the syllabus and print it. Walden’s number one “Ten Tips to being an Online Learning” is to print the syllabus. The syllabus should be the first item you read (and print out) on the first day of the course. The Syllabus includes important information about the course structure, topics, activities, and due dates (Walden University). I could not agree more. Most questions can be answered by simply reading the syllabus. Along with planning and organization is time management. I advise each student to look at the course calendar and print off a few copies. This allows you to see when assignments are due and compare to your work schedule and life activities. Never wait to the last minute for an assignment. Always work ahead. Life is very busy and there is not a pause button.

With online learning you do not have the chance to actually meet your professors. You must reach them through text, email or discussion boards. Correspond with your professors reach out to them. Another tip from Walden is to contact someone when you need assistance. In the online environment, no one will know if you have a question about an assignment or have a problem with your computer unless you say something. You will be expected to initiate contact with someone, often through e-mail or the phone, to request assistance and seek answers (Walden University) Your only lifeline to those who can help you are through technology. With that being said become familiar with your computer and online classroom. Research your school’s requirements for technology. Will I need an iPad or laptop? Is a certain program required and do I have to purchase it?

With time management, communication, planning and exploring technology a student is deemed to be successful. Determination and work are required. While at times online learning can be overwhelming, always go back to your basic strategies. Reach out to your teachers as well as your fellow classmates. Keep your course calendar on hand and stay organized.
