Causes
(P) The overexploitation of wildlife trading has caused the population of many species to decrease immensely.
(I) Quickly explain a few reasons why people poach today.
(E) “In 1988 poachers slaughtered 145 giant pandas for their gallbladders, eliminating one-seventh of the worldwide population of the species in a single year” (Ramsey 977).
(S) Discuss how the continuation of non-stop poaching can completely eradicate many species, which upsets the ecosystem.
(P) With the growth of the internet, selling and trading animals is easier for poachers to contact others through many websites.
(I) The internet has allowed poachers to broaden themselves enough to not get caught, but to be understood by other within the process.
(E) “In an 11-country investigation of 183 publicly accessible websites, IFAW found 7,122 ads offering either CITES Appendix I wildlife products (79 percent) or live animals (21 percent)” (Kiener).
(S) Since the internet is a huge global necessity used by just about everyone, it’s hard to track every single illegal trafficking action that is being done.
(P) Many of these traded animals come from exotic countries where some of its people partake in the trade to earn large sums of money.
(I) Explain one of the main reasons for hunting and poaching is for people to earn money.
(E) “Interpol estimates global wildlife trafficking to be a $20 billion industry” (Freedman 4702).
(S) Getting caught for wildlife smuggling is a very small chance that it can be considered easy money. There isn’t enough resources to put the laws into effect.
