For the intents and purposes of this research project my PICO(T) question is an examination of hospitalized patients with dementia who have had fractures and how the use of non-opioids vs. opioid analgesics impacts their pain level, safety, and adverse events. One article that I found as part of my research is from a 2014 study on the benefits of pain management for people with dementia. In this article the authors discuss how certain clinical observations can be misguided when dealing with patients with dementia-in that the differences between neuropsychiatric symptoms and manifestations of pain can be confused with one another (Flo, Gulla, & Husebo, 2014). The article also discusses the results of interventions such as tylenol and the further need for psychotropic medicine. This is relevant to my research question in helping to highlight the effectiveness of tylenol in patients with dementia and pain. It is also a relevant article as it is published within the last five years. It may also be helpful in leading to other articles that study pain management in individuals with dementia.
