Hydrologic Analysis
P1 – Hydrologic Analysis
The main objective is to find the peak discharge for your project site. Knowing this provides a basis for the hydraulic design (sizing pipes and storage facilities). Along the way you will find the soils information, precipitation data and the time of concentration for each sub-basin under both developed conditions.
Tasks
To compute the time of concentration for each subbasin you will need to complete the following tasks: https://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/
1. Look up the soils data for the project site using the NRCS’s Web Soils Survey (https://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/).
2. Compute the initial travel time (sheet flow travel time) using the San Bernardino/Riverside County Nomograph.
a. Using Word’s graphics editing tools, draw the guide lines that apply to your specific project site conditions similar to the Week 5 Practice Solution
3. Obtain the precipitation data (rainfall intensity) for the project site. This data includes the 24-hour, 25 year and 50 year intensity as well as the 85th percentile rainfall depth (inch) from LA County.
4. Compute the 25-year and 50-year peak flow rate entering each drain inlet shown on Figure 1.
5. Compute the volume of water entering each BMP located adjacent to Foothill Blvd if they detain the 85th percentile storm in this area.
6. Create a table that summarizes the results from your computations. This table will include a row for each subbasin and then a row for each combined point. The columns of this table will be the same as those shown in the Week 5 Practice 4 solution.
Submission
Submit a written summary of your work clearly stating the input data and methods used to complete each task. Separate your written summary into a discussion about (1) an overview of the assignment, (2) description of the input data, (3) results of the hydrologic analysis for the developed conditions.
To support your summary, you should provide the following:
· The edited Nomograph and velocity method charts. This will be included in the appendix of your submission.
· The precipitation map and table data as shown in the practice example.
· Calculations for the pre-developed and developed conditions should be included in the appendix.
· Label the combination points on your Pre-developed and Developed conditions drainage maps and resubmit these maps with your submission.
Google Earth File
(By double clicking on this file you can open the data directly into Google Earth. Make sure you have Google Earth installed on our machine before proceeding).
