During my time of volunteering this past week I was faced with a situation that took me by complete surprise and originally, I didn’t know what to do with the situation at hand. I had simply over heard the situation that was happening and something instinctively took over in me, and I placed myself in the situation and tried to resolve the problem. Now, the problem that was happening was that a costume of one of the members of the cast was removed to take home by the stage manager that ultimately made its way to a restaurant with them, and ultimately ended its venture there, instead of making it home with them. Now this does not sound horrible because one would think that this cast member would have other costumes. But, in fact, it was the ONLY costume that the person was wearing in the show. There was quite a bit of screaming, emotional breakdowns and almost a loss of a job with the stage manager. But, I put myself in the situation and had the opportunity to sit down with the production team, stage manager and certain cast members to resolve the issue that was being faced. By doing this, we were able to work through the situation, calm everyone down, and then, break it down from there. Sitting with each person involved, creating a plan of action of how something could be done to fix the situation and then make the plan that needed to happen. Getting the size measurements, locating a new costume, and then having an understanding that it was the sole responsibility of the stage manager to financially be responsible for the replacement of the costume, and to take full responsibility for all aspects that needed to happen. This in turn saved the job of the stage manager with the show that is opening in a week, and saving the production from falling apart. It was quite the situation to say the least, but it really showed me just how much I have learned throughout my school years, and my personal life experience that tied into the situation and to be able to simply break it down, and although starting with a screaming fit of the cast/crew/production team, it was able to be brought down to the point of calm communication, and finally the solved problem.
Have an amazing day!
