Can sustainable fashion have positive impacts on social, environmental, and economic problems in the fashion industry?

Summary of relevant points in Source 1

Henninger, C. E., Alevizou, P. J., & Oates, C. J. (2016). What is sustainable fashion?. Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management: An International Journal .

Problems

· Greenwashing during the manufacturing stage, hence leading consumers into acting unsustainably. (p. 402)

· Carbon emissions during textile production cause environmental pollution. (p. 408)

· Lack of communication and transparency in the production process. (p. 407)

· Consumers are not well educated on matters to do with sustainability in the fashion industry. (p. 408)

Solutions

· The use of organic raw materials that are decomposable and friendly to the environment. (p. 402)

· Reuse, recycle, and remanufacture end products in order to reduce carbon emissions being released into the environment. (p. 408)

· A well-defined matrix that provides fashion companies with the flexibleness to indicate how they interpret sustainable fashion and their future plans. (p. 412)

· Incorporate the use of new machines that consume less energy and are eco-efficient. (p. 408)

· The study also indicates that sustainable fashion is achievable with the right social implications in mind. In this case, the social implications include better working conditions and fair wages. (p. 404, p. 412)

Summary of relevant points in Source 2

Zamani, B., Sandin, G., & Peters, G. M. (2017). Life cycle assessment of clothing libraries: can collaborative consumption reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion?. Journal of cleaner production162, 1368-1375.

Problems

· Freshwater ecotoxicity due to disposal of unwanted and indecomposable clothing. (p. 1371-72) These problems are really linked to the fast-fashion culture. The demand for new and fashionable clothing means factories are producing more at a cost to the environment. This is also from disposal of unwanted clothing, even if it is still in wearable condition.

· Climate change caused by toxic emissions. (p. 1371) From textile production?

· The need for high volumes of energy needed in the manufacture and transport of garments. (P. 1372)

Solutions

· The use of energy that is relatively low in carbon intensity, such as the use of hydroelectricity and wind power. (p. 1373)

· The adoption of a collaborative consumption strategy as a long-lasting substitute for conducting short-lived services since it will significantly reduce environmental impacts caused by short-lived products within the fashion industry. (p. 1374-75)

· Adoption of garment reusing techniques that will reduce the environmental burden associated with dumb sites. (p. 1374)

· The production and consumption of quality fashion products that are environmentally preferable, this will minimize environmental impacts associated with synthetic or indecomposable materials. (p. 1374) Other factors associated with clothing libraries or leasing services may mean looking at emissions from transportation and how that can be solved.

Summary of relevant points in source 3

Şener, T., Bişkin, F., & Kılınç, N. (2019). Sustainable dressing: Consumers' value perceptions towards slow fashion. Business Strategy and the Environment28(8), 1548-1557.

Problems

· Lack of transparency and authority in the production processes, an aspect that may hinder sustainable applications. (p. 1549)

· Lack of environmental awareness. (p. 1547)

· Increased purchase intention that has resulted in the production of poor-quality garments. (P. 1549) I think this relates to the demand to fast fashion?

Solution

· Increased awareness on sustainability in the fashion industry in order to change consumer’s purchasing behaviors and value perception. (p. 1548-49) Yes but how can this be done?

· Stakeholders in the fashion industry need to focus on locality, authenticity, functionality, and equity as being the main aspects that contribute to customer value in order to create sustainable practices. (p. 1555) Yes, this is a good recommendation but are there any practical solutions to implement this?

· Understanding different orientations that influence customer perceptions in order to provide designers and other stakeholders in the fashion industry with insights on how to create sustainable designs. (p.1549-52)

Justification of the selected source

This section will entail currency, purpose, relevance, accuracy, and authority to justify the selected source.

Currency

Based on the publication date and year, the selected source is appropriate to support the study since it is peer-reviewed and updated. The chosen source was published on 23rd April 2019. This means that information provided by the source is updated and relatable to the topic at hand. The article has not been revised since its publication; it is, however, peer-reviewed and cited by more than eleven scholars. References used within the article are current and relatable to the topic.

Authority

The authors of the article are Şener, Tuğba, Ferdi Bişkin, and Nurgül Kılınç. The article highlights some personal information on the authors on the first page that suggests knowledge on the topic at hand. A good example is that of Nurgül Kılınç; Faculty of Art and Design, Selçuk University, Konya, Turkey. The authors have also published other researches on the topic and this makes them knowledgeable in the field.

Accuracy

The information necessitated by the authors in the article is relevant to the study since it focuses on sustainable dressing and consumers’ perceptions towards slow fashion. The information is also supported by evidence from other scholars who have previously carried out similar studies. (Şener, Bişkin & Kılınç, 2019). The information has been peer-reviewed and cited by eleven scholars. This is particularly evident from the Google scholar website. The study has not been funded by any organization, and therefore its reliability has not been affected. Information in this article squarely aligns with my study as it focuses on exploring some of the positive impacts of the sustainable fashion industry.

Purpose

The article was written to inform scholars and stakeholders in the fashion industry on how they can achieve sustainability in the industry by understanding consumers’ perceptions towards slow fashion. Based on the discussion provided in the article, it is evident that the authors are geographically biased since they based their research primarily on two countries; Turkey and Kazakhstan.

Usefulness

I would highly consider using the article in my literature review. Some of the reasons why I would use this article include (1) The expertise of the authors to critically research and provide detailed conclusions, relevance and accuracy of the sources used. (2) The tone used throughout the article, especially in gathering and analyzing data. (3) The study concludes by providing some of the strategies that organizations and other stakeholders in the fashion industry can use to create sustainability, an aspect that could positively impact the environment.

Critical Synthesis

Can sustainable fashion have positive impacts on social, environmental, and economic problems in the fashion industry?

For years, the fashion industry has been making efforts aimed at creating sustainability within the sector. This has been done through intensifying (awareness campaigns and by implementing changes in processes and products. Two possible solutions but can you clearly link them to the problems?) Increased awareness among stakeholders has particularly resulted in the inclusion of different strategies aimed at addressing environmental problems. From the first article, Henninger, Alevizou & Oates (2016) highlight that contemplating what is sustainable fashion is critical in avoiding modern-day problems being experienced in other related industries that have not yet embraced sustainability (Henninger, Alevizou & Oates, 2016). The authors conclude by indicating that sustainability in the fashion industry can only be achieved if changes are comprehensive, from the enhancement of working conditions to utilization of renewable sources of energy. In reference 2, the authors replicate some of the insights from study 1. The study particularly highlights that the fashion industry needs to adapt and make changes that will create a collaborative consumption behavior (Zamani, Sandin & Peters, 2017). This collaborative consumption will act as a substitute to the customary ways of conducting business within the fashion industry; hence it will minimize environmental impacts. The two studies vividly show that it is critical to sustainably produce and consume fashion products and services that reduce negative environmental impacts. In source 3, the authors also insist that some of the negative environmental impacts being experienced are triggered by the intensified clothing consumption behavior. Hence, (studying different orientations that influence customer perceptions in the fashion industry will provide designers and other stakeholders with insights on how to create sustainable fashion HOw will this change the culture of fast fashion and the demand? Can sustainability and fast fashion exist together?) (Şener, Bişkin & Kılınç, 2019). I believe that if the suggested changes from the above sources are effectively implemented, then there would be a substantial reduction in environmental impacts.

Evidently, sustainable fashion has positive impacts on social, environmental, and economic problems being experienced in the fashion industry. Sustainability in the fashion industry revolves around quality, affordability, recycling, renewable and controlled consumption. Sustainable fashion helps brands and designers focus on quality materials that are long-lasting and friendly to the environment. Sustainable fashion also reduces waste, and this saves money and resources that could be channeled to other uses. From the above discussion, it is also evident that the responsibility of sustainable fashion lies with not only the fashion companies but also individuals and the government in terms of enacting sustainable change. Stakeholders in the fashion industry also need to embrace technology as a tool to help minimize the negative environmental impacts. You have given a clear stance that relates to the review task but you haven't clearly addressed all of these issues above. The main way to improve your synthesis is to consider the problems which have been identified in the sources, select two to three of them and then link solutions to the problems being sure to compare and contrast the ideas. Your information tends to be in a list that doesn't show proper synthesis
