The intended audience are coaches, players, and administrators

Coaches train players and spend most of their time providing special skills training

Various aspects of leadership allow coaches to recognize strengths and weaknesses

Coach should practice self-leadership to which allows for more effective and better training

The intended audience for the presentation are coaches, players, and administrators.

Coaches train a coaching staff and players being a leader and providing special skills training to others.

This presentation shows various aspects of leadership that are beneficial to coaches as well as players and administrators and would help unearth some of their strengths and weaknesses.

Concept of Leadership

The term leadership has no one single definition

The concept of leadership is therefore perceived and promoted in different ways (Haber, 2012)

Traditionally, leadership is transactional, hierarchical, and excusive

Leadership fosters creativity as well as innovation

There are various definitions of the term leadership as scholars and other experts have failed to agree on one common definition.

This has made the concept of leadership to be perceived and promoted in different ways (Haber, 2012).

Leadership is considered both an art and a science where people are motivated into achieving a common goal

Therefore, leadership can be defined as the ability to influence people into achieving a common goal (Surji, 2015)

Positivity, as a skill, involves creating a positive atmosphere within the organization

Communication, as a skill, enables leaders to explain their vision to the team. This involves communication skills like verbal, non-verbal, listening, articulating, expression, explaining, correspondence and leading body language.

Leaders should be able to motivate coaches as well as players into developing a better skill set and to be more innovative.

Inspire is a characteristics of a good leader

A good leader will be able to inspire coaches and players through actions and words which will enable the organization to have a common vision

Great leaders provide inspiration in many different ways

Inspire is a characteristics of a very good leader. A good leaders inspires coaches, players, and administrators trough actions and words.

These actions and words will enable the organization to believe in and strive for a common goal.

There are many different ways in which a leader can inspire any team or individual.

Having inspiration raises the performance level of individuals as well as the team

Inspiration ignites creativity and innovation among the coaches and players

Inspiration creates passion among the coaches and players

Having inspiration breeds trust between the coaches and players

Having inspiration is very important because it raises the performance level of not only the team but the coaching staff as well.

Active Listening

Active listening is a strategy used to improve leadership skills, communication in particular

This strategy encourages strong communication between the coaching staff and the players

Having communication skills is equally important between administrators and the coaching staff

This strategy allows the leader to focus on both the task at hand and the individual performing the task

Active listening is a very good strategy used by leaders to improve leadership skills.

This strategy allows the leader to focus on both the task and the individual who is performing the task.

Communicating is important to improve and encourages the relationship between the leader and team members.

Components of Active Listening

Comprehend. The listener should pay very close attention to the speaker’s language, both verbal and non-verbal

Retain. Remembering the key points of the speaker

Respond. Confirmation that the listener understands what the speaker is saying

The components of active listening include;

Comprehend what the speaker is saying and provide feedback is very important in active listening.

Retain what the speaker is saying and become involved in the conversation. This will ensure the listener is making mental notes of what the speaker is saying.

Respond with feedback and asking questions is a very positive way to ensure the topic is being understood by the listener.

Strategic thinking means planning for the future

Strategic thinking, as a concept, can be used to create a competitive advantage for any organization (Haycock, 2012)

Strategic thinking literary means planning for the future. There are many ways an organization can plan for the future and create a competitive advantage in doing so.

Any leaders can be tasked with ensuring strategic thinking is being used when creating the competitive edge over the competition.

Having influence usually determines a leaders ability to influence players in achieving team goals and objectives

Influence is one of the most important leadership skills any leader must have. If a leader succeeds or fails is determined mostly by the influence he/she has on the coaching staff and players.

A leader is usually graded by his/her ability to influence the coaching staff and team members in achieving individual and team goals and objectives.

Communication style. The leader should learn a communication style that promotes relations.

Consistency. The leader should be consistent in their actions including expectations, approaches and accountability.

Compassion. The leader should show that they care about the team members in all aspects.

Self-awareness can be defined as being aware of ones own personality
