Short Research Paper Assignment
Purpose: This short research essay assignment is designed to conclude the process of introducing the student to how to write an argument and how to properly adhere to MLA Documentation Guidelines (8th edition) within this argument. Prior to writing, be sure that you have submitted your thesis and writing organizer approval. Lastly, also refer to our readings and practice exercises from our course textbook.
IMPORTANT WRITING POINTS TO CONSIDER:
· Be sure that in whatever topic that you choose that it is clear what your position is regarding the topic that you select.
· Remember the overall basic structure of an academic essay: MLA Heading, Creative Title, Introduction Paragraph, Thesis Statement, Body Paragraphs: Topic Sentences and Supporting Details (this is where you properly incorporate your research), and Conclusion Paragraph.
· Your thesis MUST take a stand on an issue that is clearly identified; and it serves as your blueprint that must reveal the key point (sometimes including 3 sub-points) that you will prove (using your research as the supportive details and examples for your argument).
· To be credible, we must use a range of scholarly sources. Refer to list below to further support your thesis (claim) and paper’s overall discussion. Along with the Annotated Bibliography Assignment.
· Also, be sure to use at least two of the Aristotle’s Rhetorical Appeals: Ethos, Pathos and Logos.
Ethos: Appealing to your reader’s ethics, his or her moral conscience.
Pathos: Appealing to your reader’s emotions, his or her heart strings.
Logos: Appealing to your reader’s logic, his or her logical mind or intelligence.
· Be sure to also include a paragraph that addresses the opposing viewpoint.
· Works Cited Page (be sure that the words Works Cited are centered at the top of the page, be sure that the entries are in alphabetical order by last name, make sure that each entry includes all the proper information for its type, and make sure that a hanging indent is present when needed.)
MLA FORMATTING AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
· Use at least 4-6 short direct quotes, a long with the proper In Text/Parenthetical Citations (properly cited or 1 point will be deducted for each error.)
· Works Cited Page (adhering to given guidelines or 1 point will be deducted for each error.)
· 6-7 pages in Length (you must write at least 6 pages in length with the Works Cited Page appearing on page 7 or 8)
Range of Sources Required: refer to your Annotated Bibliographies
One Scholarly Journal Article, One Scholarly Book, One Newspaper Article, One Magazine Article and/ you may choose one other kind of source that is not an internet source. (If these sources do not appear properly on your Works Cited and as In-Text Citations throughout your essay, points will be deducted from your grade.)
