Outlines While you may have dreaded those formal outlines with Roman numerals that you had to do in middle school or high school, outlining can serve a purpose in organizing a draft. However, you have to think about your writing process and what kind of outline will serve you best. It can be a formal outline if you like that sort of thing, but it can also be a sketch outline of topics or claims. It can be a topic sentence outline with full sentences and evidence included under each paragraph. You should take the information that you have from your prewriting and planning and use whatever method you feel might suit you best. In any case, your outline should give a sense of the contexts of the problem you’ll be examining and the order in which you will analyze them.
