Purpose statement
“In fact, data from the CDC indicate that the U.S. obesity average was 12% in 1990 and had grown to 23% by 2005” (Charles E, 2008). People in U.S. usually like to eat fast food like fries and burgers, however these kind of fast food will lead to obesity. However, obesity is a problem. Obesity will cause disease and harm to people’s heath, in order that we should prevent obesity. I think people who obesity will willing to read my topic to learn the harm of fast food and learn to control their weight. Also, I think every body will impact from my essay because I think we should aware of being healthy.
Should children eat fries?
Fast food is growing fast in America. “More recent estimates show that in 2001, there were about 222,000 fast-food locations in the United States, generating sales of more than $125 billion. The number is projected to increase by 4.1% in 2002, with estimated sales of $130.1 billion” (Paeratakul, 2003). Fries is the kind of fast food appear every where on the street. Fries always have good taste let people always want to eat them. While eating at "fast food" restaurants has increased the risk of obesity (Jeffery, 2006). Some people think fries taste so good, they cannot stop eating fries. While some people may think they should decrease the intake of fast food. In my book, I think we should decrease the intake of fast food. Because fast food will not only let kids become obesity, but also affect the whole society to have a bad habit on eating.
Firstly, Body Mass Index is a formula to determine weight and height, if BMI > 30, a person is obesity (Wadden, 2002). Also here is a news report that “In fact, data from the CDC indicate that the U.S. obesity average was 12% in 1990 and had grown to 23% by 2005” (Charles E, 2008). There is a huge growth rate of obesity in U.S., and obesity is harm to health, we should prevent become obesity and stop eating fries and burgers.
Kids are easy to become obesity when they take too much calories in than it burns everyday. So if a kid who eat too much fast food and do not exercise will become a cough potato and have a risk of getting obesity. Obesity can increase the risk of disease like type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol level, high blood pressure, or osteoarthritis (Must, 1999). Also, obesity can make a bad looking on one person. If someone gets fat, she can find she cannot wear beautiful clothes, even more; others will make jokes on her. Like myself, I like eat McDonald’s and KFC so I was overweight at middle school. My mother told me I will get disease if I’m too fat. Some my classmates do not want make friends with me because I was too fat, they also laugh at me. At that time, I felt lonely and hopeless, because I was fat, I couldn’t join in games play with those “thin girls”. More addition, I find I cannot breathe as well as other children, I cannot run fast and I always can feel I am tired. Subsequently, I can feel it is because my weight, I am too fat, excess fat let my feel uncomfortable. Then, I decided eat more vegetables instead of fast food to lose weight. I can really feel obesity is harm to our body. In order that, we should not eat too much fast food.
Secondly, kids like to follow the tendency to go to the fast food restaurant. A survey of 4,746 students 11 to 18 years of age reported that about 75% ate at a fast-food restaurant during the week (Paeratakul, 2003). If one kid wants to eat fast food, he will introduce his friends to eat fast food with him. So, one kid bring another kid to the fast food restaurant, they will eat junk food together. It is such a bad habit and will affect many kids to eat junk food. Then they will think it alright to eat fast food, fast food will not harm on them. Children usually cannot distinguish the bad or good, they just follow others and do the same things to follow the tendency. Also, fast food companies are using different ways to attract kid to their restaurant. Like some restaurant have a specific section of their restaurant menus labelled ‘kids’ menus’ (Hobin 2013). Also, some restaurant may send special gift to kids to attract them. Because of kids will have competitive psychology, so they may want to get all of the toys send by fast food restaurant to show to other kids. Then, they will go to the fast food restaurant very often.
However, fast food will make them malnutrition. Fast food had higher intake of energy, fat, saturated fat, sodium, carbonated soft drink, and lower intake of vitamins A and C, milk, fruits and vegetables (Paeratakul, 2003). So that kids cannot grow up healthily, they may have lower height than normal children who don’t eat fast food. In order that, kids should not follow the tendency to eat fast food, schools and their parents should provide health meal and diner for their kids to let their kids grow healthily.
In conclusion, we should not eat too much fries, because fries will let us getting fat and harm to our health. To achieve a healthy life, people should not being obesity and should not have bad habitat on eating. Only in this way, we can have a healthy and harmonies society.
