II. Paragraph 1: Introduction

A. Hook: The joy of an hour presents the use of unique literary styles that effectively portray the intention of the author

B. Author: The author of the story is Kate Chopin (1854-1904)

C. Title: The Story of an Hour

D. Main Characters: The main characters include Mr. and Mrs. Mallard, Mr. Mallard’s friend, Richards, and Mrs. Mallard’s sister

E.A short summary: The story begins with learning that Mrs. Mallard has a heart problem and therefore requires to be handled with care while breaking some sad news. News develop that Mr. Mallard have passed away from a rail accident that occurs far from home. Richards is one of the first people to receive the sad news, and takes an action to report the same to the wife before anyone else. Mrs. Mallard’s sister and Richard try to console with her to remain calm all along. The sister breaks the news in a cool manner so as not to cause any trouble to her. The three settle at the bottom when suddenly Mr. Mallard enters the house. He was never in the said accident, a situation that brings about to much joy to the wife that she dies.

A. Topic sentence: Foreshadowing enhances an effective delivery of the message.

1. Who says it: The author is the person who states the quote under consideration

2. What’s happening on the text when it’s said: Mrs. Mallard is in her own room mourning the death of her husband, and she feels as if something is coming about from the sky reaching out to her.

C. Quote from the text: “There was something coming to her, and she waited for it, fearfully” (Chopin 1981).

D. Analysis of the quote: The quote proves the thesis in that it has one of the literary elements used in the story, which is the foreshadowing device.

E. Closing sentence: Foreshadowing is used together with other devices such as conditional and unconditional love

A. Topic sentence: Conditional and unconditional love theme is used in the fulfillment of the author intention of the author.

B. Context of the quote

1. Who says the quote: The quote is said by Mrs. Sister

2. What’s happening when the quote is mentioned: The quote is mentioned when Mrs. Mallard locks herself in a private room to mourn the sad news of the death of her husband

C. Quote from the text: “Louise, open the door, I beg open the door, you will make yourself ill” (Chopin 1981).

D. Analysis of the quote: The quote indicates that Mrs. Mallards sister cares for her even at times of difficulty, and therefore is ready to walk with her at the trying times.

E. Closing sentence: In addition to foreshadowing and unconditional themes, the author also uses independence from the past to pass the message in the story

V. Paragraph 4: Third body paragraph

A. Topic sentence: Independence from the past as a theme is used in passing the main message to the audience.

B. Context of the quote

1. Who says the quote: The quote is said by the author as he describes the flow of events in the story

2. What’s happening when the quote is mentioned: As the quote is mentioned, Mrs. Mallard is thinking about the future without her husband.

C. Quote from the text: “But she saw beyond that bitter moment along procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely” (Chopin 1981).

D. Analysis of the quote: the quote shows that despite the sad moment that Mrs. Mallard goes through, she still hopes for a better tomorrow, which is not attached to the current suffering

E. Closing sentence: In addition to independence of the past, the author also uses selfless behavior as one of the major themes in the text

VI. Conclusion

Kate Chopin uses a combination of different themes and devices to tell his story. Each of the devices used enhances a better understating of the message and also enable the author to drive the message home easily. The use of the various themes and other devices makes the story more interesting and catchy. The text is very important as it shows the effective use of literary elements. It is an indication of the use and the effects of literary styles. The text could be used to bring about a better understanding of how best to use literary devices.
