Advocacy Speech Outline 1. Introduction
1. Attention Getter: Malcolm Alexander a Lousiana Man, served 38 years in jail for a crime he did not commit. He was convicted in 1980 for a November 1979 rape, after ineffective counsel and extremely unreliable eyewitness statements. His lawyer was so incompetent that he was disbarred later. The Innocence Project took on his case, and in 2013, they were able to recover hair stands from the crime scene.
2. Thesis: The Innocence Project is a non-profit organization that seeks to exonerate wrongly convicted men and women who fell victim to the depraved, broken, outdated Justice system that has been left unaccountable.
3. Preview: Present a preview of the main points. 1. MP1 : NEED The Unfair system. 2. MP2: SATISFACTION - Exonerate and reform. 3. MP3: VISUALIZATION: Equal, Fair, and Accountability
2. MP1:NEED Needs to end the unfair, corrupt justice system that seeks to discriminate against vulnerable populations
3. MP2: SATISFACTION: THey take upon cases that questionable convictions gather evidence that could exonerate them and their goal is to reform and create a fair and equal justice system
4. MP3: VISUALIZATION: Without them, hundreds of innocent men and women would have stayed in prison for the rest of their lives for crimes they did not commit. It would allow the same system to stay in place because there would be no concerted effort for reform. This has allowed many prisoners to get hope in their cases and Malcolm Alexander after 38 years was finally freed in 2018 after the charges were dropped. Their efforts, allow for DAs to have more integrity in their convictions and reinvestigate potentially flawed convictions from the past. It will also push for federal and state lawmakers to pass more equitable and modern laws that better represent our sacred justice system.
5. Conclusion: 1. The Innocence Project, a highly valued and respected organization
brings attention to eh corruptness of the American justice system and they do so by freeing innocent people through the process of exoneration and calling for policy and legislative reform. This organization will let innocent people know that they have a voice and won't be a victim. Stories like Malcolm Alexander serve as a guide that there is light to the end of the tunnel and we should all contribute to this extremely valuable cause.
