In the wide Sargasso sea, Christophine, an Obeah practitioner, listen to Bertha’s emotion need and tries to give her a solution is similar to how a modern psychiatrist helps her patient.

Body paragraph 1

A. obeah encompasses a wide variety and range of beliefs and practices to help the patient. These knowledge come from different sources including sacred traditions and medical knowledge. To be a psychologist, it need to take the advance degree.

B. Originally, on the seventeenth-century slave plantations of the British Caribbean, these beliefs and practices drew on a number of common and broadly related African models or belief systems, including sacred traditions and medical knowledge, modified over the years by the New World environment, including its plant and animal life.

C. Modern Psychology also require specialists to have the knowledge of medicine. Therefore, the information required behind modern psychology and Obeah are similar.

Body Paragraph 2 (unknown)

Body paragraph 3

A. The relationship between Bertha and Christophine shows the dependence between a therapist and its client. Thus, the way how bertha wants to buy the portion from christophine also shows their relationship similar to doctor and the patient.

B. Emotional bonding between counselor and client is different for every unique counselor and client,” Sommers-Flanagan says. “It might involve compassionate or empathic listening or humor, or just sitting together while the client experiences strong emotions, or giving positive and supportive feedback to clients.” (Connecting with clients, Laurie Mayers)

“yes you can, I know you can, That is what I wish and that is why I came here. You can make people love or hate. Or… or die” I said (82)

C. Emotional bonding is an important aspect in modern counseling. The relationship is unique and most of the time the client will rely on her therapist. This can be seen from how Bertha really rely on christophine.

Body paragraph 4

A. The use of portion of Obeah is similar to the modern medicine because it all has the origin of herbal medicine. More, it required patients to pay to their therapist.

B. The practice of obeah usually involved specialists, often skilled in the use of plant medicines, who were sometimes paid fees by individual clients. The practitioners as well as their clients could be men or women.” (Bilby and Handler, 154)

C. The relationship of how christophine makes the solution to Bertha and Bertha wants to pay back is similar to modern psychological treatment.

Body Paragraph 5

A. Both the treatment in Modern psychology therapy and Obeah can bring the patient their therapist into another level of reliance. They trust each other and bond together.

B. This can be seen from the evidence that Bertha seeks advice from Christophine about how could make Rochester love her. Then, Christophine will gives her a solution that can be good to her. For example, she said: “when man don’t love you, more you try, more he hate you, man like that. If you love them they treat you bad, if don’t love them they after you night and day bothering your soul case out.” (79)

C. Since the relationship is bond together, the patient can share their personal emotion to their therapist. This is just like how Bertha can share all her emotion to christophine.

In summary. the way how modern psychiatrist treats to their patient is the similar to how christophine treats to Bertha for the following ways: the therapist and the patient have the emotional bond. The patient rely on the therapist and trust they will give the right solution. More, they all has the treatment solution that involves medicine but in different formula.
