Explanatory Outline: African American Artists in Americas Modern Art World

Thesis: It is to my lamentable surprise that the modern art world is no exception to the discrimination and oppression of African Americans. I attest to this unfortunate fact, and believe African American artists should be acknowledged for their great artistic abilities and attributions to American culture and art; additionally, the modern art world in America must ratify their freedom to showcase their art without fear of prejudice, maltreatment, or any form of discrimination.

1. In the Introduction, I will state the fact of historical oppression of African Americans and the modern injustice that still exists. Then I will state that the modern art world is no exception to the oppression of African Americans.

2. I will present the prejudices that African Americans experience and shed light on the truth and present my efforts to support the influence of their art and abolishment of discrimination against them. I will invoke concern and hopefully sympathy for African American artists.

3. In the first body paragraph I will shed light on the history of African Americans in art, specifically in America. I will give examples of African Americans who have struggled to succeed in the art world. I will stress the atrocity and urgency of awareness to this matter by including examples and historical facts.

4. This body paragraph may include the discrimination of art that was made by African Americans in every aspect. -Include prejudices through American history and examples of such discrimination. (Also include efforts to eliminate and erase African American art)

5. The second paragraph will discuss the bridge of slavery, segregation, “Jim Crowe Characters” influence and journey of African American Art. I will also discuss the hardships, struggles and journey of African American artists to present day.

6. This paragraph will include certain events and artists who have been subjected to discrimination and the events following to the same systematic inequalities in the modern art world. I can argue that African American Artists may be, if not the most significant, vital source of American Art History.

7. The third body paragraph will focus on modern day African American Artists and shed light on their efforts to showcase their art. (Here I will display examples of African American Artists struggling with favoritism and racism)

8. This paragraph will give examples of modern art galleries and curators who might have witnessed or cooperated in this conscious or subconscious systematic discrimination. I will give evidence to support my case and provide articles, quotes, and/or examples of maltreatment , racism, etc.

9. The fourth body paragraph will include my experience and journey investigating and interviewing African American artists. (Here I will include my volunteer work and personal experience with African American Artist that I have personally met with)

10. In this paragraph I will discuss my research and interviews. I will share my experience visiting art museums and galleries. I will include some opinion of other ethnically different artists and implore the need to discuss this reality.

11. In the conclusion, I will refer back to my initial statement and connect the dire need to spread awareness of this matter. I will include my gratitude of the new knowledge I have acquired regarding this issue. In the conclusion I will stress the importance of acknowledging African American artists. I will possibly refer to Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of equality and especially in art. (Here I will remember to solidify my case , urgency of awareness and change to the modern art world in America)
