The Black Sheep

I. Introduction

A. Attention-getter/hook- There is this one time my family had a guest, and guess what was the first questions my parents got. ‘Is that your child?’ The child in question was me. I am the black sheep in my family because of my dark skin tone, but there is more.

B. Significance of topic

1. This topic means a lot to me because it is a journey of acceptance.

2. I hope that this topic will inspire you to accept yourself and to not let people define you.

C. Thesis; I would like to share my story with everyone to inspire them to accept their faults.

II. Set-up

A. Background about myself

1. I am from an African-American family of three children.

2. Everyone in the family is light-skinned, except me, I have a dark skin.

3. Thus, most people think that I am adopted, and some of my relatives are hostile towards me because of my dark skin.

B. People involved

1. My parents and siblings are very supportive, although sometimes, my siblings bully me because of my skin color.

2. My family often are the ones who get the questioning eyes whenever we go out, some people think am adopted while others think my mom cheated.

3. Some of my relatives requested for a DNA test to prove I was their brother’s child.

C. Setting

1. Life as the ‘black sheep’ of the family has been tough.

2. Most of the relatives from my father’s side are not welcoming because of my dark skin.

D. Short anecdote

1. It has always been said that, the side of the towel you use to wipe your face today, might be the side you use to wipe your butt.

2. It is wrong to disrespect people because of their skin color.

III. Beginning of Acceptance

A. I cannot say I am good at academics, but I try my best. However, I have a talent that has made most of my family members begin to respect me and take me seriously.

B. I love acting and singing, when I first wanted to start out, I was six years old, and no one took me seriously, including my mother.

C. At first, I felt neglected and I got depressed, if I was in a cartoon, I would be the grumpy one with a dark raining cloud on their head.

D. When my teacher told my mom about my talent, that is when she started getting interested and showing support.

IV. Climax of Acceptance

A. My father also became supportive and together we started looking for opportunities to build my talent.

B. Thanks be to God, I got a spotlight at a singing competition and won second place with a lumpsum cheque.

C. I was excited, my parents were happy and they were posting about it everywhere.

V. A fully accepted individual

A. Most of the family members on my dad’s side starts showing some love and respect to me and my mom.

B. Sometimes, I do get bullied because of my dark skin color, however, I know my worth and I came to realize that skin color is nothing, I am a beautiful person and I do not have to prove my worth to anyone.
