Research Question:

How did Beijing Olympic Game reflect and promote China’s national strength and standing in terms of politics and economics?

Background:

Sports are popular today as many people enjoy doing various kinds of sport. China, was even pay close attention to national sport development. As early as in Mao’s period, Mao saw that physical development was a part mission of national political proposition. He advocated that promoting physical activities and building up people’s health. Jiang Zemin, also emphasized the importance of physical education as a key elements to form a strong country. Since 2001, the successful Olympic bid signified that an unprecedented mega sport event would take place in China for the first time in Chinese history. In Olympic stage, sports are put on the highest level and different from various commercial sports nowadays. It is an opportunity to represent not only the athlete’s strength but also the national strength in terms of political aspect and economic aspect.

Purpose and major structure and content of the paper:

In this paper, I try to examine and analyze the Beijing Olympic from political and economic aspects rather than just focusing on a sport event. I seek to prove that Beijing Olympic Game was not just a sport event, but also integrated with political aspect. For the political aspect, the 2008 Beijing Olympic was a political legacy of two former leaders: Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao. They inherited the former ideology of improving national physical education and further develop to a larger context. By winning the bid in 2001, Beijing actually won a competition combined with overall national political strength, technology, culture, etc. In 2008, Beijing enhanced China’s national standing by presenting Chinese culture, economic, not only to Chinese citizens but also to the rest of the world. I will use examples such as the opening ceremony to show how Chinese cultures and strength were advertised. Next, the Olympic Games presented a strong national cohesion and pride as participants from all parts of China strived for a same goal. This showed a unified country and therefore solid political power. Moreover, the diplomacy were further evolved as more than 200 countries participated.

To further break down the political aspect, some economic reasons are also considered essential to political power. Beside the political support of Chinese government, the financial support was also involved. For example, China experienced huge investment and construction of infrastructure and stadiums such as the Bird Nest stadium and Water Cube stadium during the preparation period. This was a result of strong economic base. Moreover, by hosting the Olympic mega event, many Chinese cities did perfect brandings to themselves. This led to a booming of tourism which directly increased cities and even China’s popularity.

Make sure to focus on a limited number (three, for example) of the political dimension of the event. Be detailed, concise. Don’t be superficial.
