ESTIMATE THE DIRECT AND INDIRECT COST and RETURN ON INVESTMENT

OF ONE WORKPLACE INJURY

(50 points)

Directions: Incidents resulting in losses and are very costly to organizations. The immediate or direct costs are insured visible costs such as: workers comp, medical expenses etc. However there are other indirect costs that companies incur that are also very expensive. See page pg. 9 Fig. 1-8 for examples. Please go through the scenario and identify as many visible losses as possible and attempt to place an estimated value on the costs. You can use the Internet to gain estimation numbers for each direct and indirect cost estimates for this assignment.

Scenario:

An employee, Lynn Johnson, noticed that a light bulb in a hallway was burned out and decided to change it. Lynn looked around for a stepladder, but since there wasn’t one around, climbed up on a wheeled chair to reach the ceiling. As Lynn reached for the light bulb, the chair slid and Lynn fell, hitting the floor and suffering a fractured vertebra and a dislocated shoulder.

Calculate the Total Costs:

1. Two co-workers took Lynn to the hospital @ 10 AM.

2. Hospital is 7 miles away & wait 3 hours for treatment.

3. Lynn & co-workers are paid $15.00/hour.

4. Temporary employee was hired @ $10.00/hour.

5. Co-workers work 18 hours overtime for the week.

6. Supervisor investigates accident & files report.

7. Supervisor pay is $20.00/hour

8. Investigation takes 3 days total 8 hour days

9. Lynn’s attorney files a motion for damages unsafe work practices

10. OSHA Fine is $50,000 for repeat offense

11. Add any other hidden cost you can think of.
