While we've talked about the lack of price transparency in healthcare, this article goes in a slightly different direction and with more details.  

After reading the article:

1. Find two hospitals of interest to you (VA Hospital and Beaumont Hospital both are in Michigan)and look up a procedure that you anticipate you will either perform or order in your future practice as an APRN.  It could be anything billable such as a CT scan, managing labor and delivery, central line insertion, or an office visit.  

Consider the following questions:

2. How do the prices compare?  Is this information easy to find?  Does it feel like the facility is intentionally make the information hard to access?

3. As an APRN will this help you and your patients make decisions regarding where to obtain care?  

4. As an APRN will this information affect where you consider finding work?  Do you think price transparency could be beneficial during contract negotiations?  Could knowing how much a facility bills for your services, procedures, and orders be empowering when assessing your fiscal worth during a job hunt, or when seeking a raise?
