DATABASE SECURITY 4

New Auditing Roles in Oracle 12c

Student’s Name: Divya Shanthipuram Pandurangan Institutional Affiliation: New England College

Date: 07/02/2020

Oracle 12c has recently introduced two important features that have enhanced the auditing process within system databases. AUDIT_ADMIN and AU-

DIT_VIEWER features are particularly used to separate the roles of users of system databases. According to Blake “AUDIT_ADMIN gives absolute rights to a data- base administrator to perform various data manipulation activities on a schema” (Blake, 2017). AUDIT_VIEWER, on the other hand, is used to allow users to ana- lyze and manage audit data. These roles have improved the effectiveness of the auditing process which has also improved the database security. Auditing refers to processes that manage and records the activities being carried out in the database. It provides an opportunity for both users and non-users to access the database systems. Database administrators are mandated to take the responsibility of setting up a program that can be used to monitor and manage activities performed in the database systems (Farooq, Avantsa & Sharman, 2016). However, it is always under the jurisdiction of the database security managers to man- age the auditing programs. The database security managers are mandated with the responsibility to authorize any client who wishes to access the database sys- tem by granting them access rights to the systems. However, to monitor the activities carried out by a non-user in the database system, a unified approach to se- curity is used. The new features of the Oracle 12c are used to provide the best auditing programs that help companies handle both authorized and unauthorized users of the databases (Blake, 2017). Therefore, auditing is primarily used to promote accountability by controlling access to the databases through verification. It also monitors all activities happening on a system database. The Oracle 12c primarily introduced these features to enhance the security of the databases.

This is achieved by recording the clients’ details and data to its security details. Therefore, all security efforts in the databases are focused on improving the cred- ibility and consistency of the activities carried out in the database system. Typically, “a well-designed audit program can detect intruders to a system and

quickly deter wrongful data manipulation” (Farooq, Avantsa & Sharman, 2016). In case there is an illegal manipulation, AUDIT_ADMIN is used to detect and pre- vent the unlawful changes of data within the databases. Oracle 12c Audit programs are used by most companies to inform the administrators of any strange op- erations happening in the database systems. All strange activities can be detected following the order of occurrence and the time of occurrence (Farooq, Avantsa & Sharman, 2016). For example, they can be detected from deleting tables, or changing the rows and manipulating files. In some other cases, the audit pro-

gram can be used to inform the administrators of the unusual activities happening in the database. “Every client needs Audit-viewer rights to perform specific actions on the schema” (Gaetjen, Knox &Maroulis, 2017). However, if these rights go overboard, the audit program should inform the managers of such action. The role of auditing programs involves recording all activities occurring in the system database. When registered personnel of database security are employed by the company, he or she is given the responsibility of analyzing the past vents in the database (Gaetjen, Knox &Maroulis, 2017). This involves checking whether there is any suspicious activity recorded by the audit program. Operations of linking several plans including table updating may be performed by both autho- rized and the unauthorized.
