Digital Forensics in Solving Crime Venkatesh Bodhupally
NEC
Digital forensics is the process of searching, acquiring and the preservation of digital content that may be used as evidence and maintaining is significance.
Digital information is obtained, analyzed and preserved to be used as evidence. In recent years, digital forensics has become an integral part of our lives. People are increasingly doing a lot of things online and they are leaving a digital footprint that can be used against them. Digital forensics has become popular in solving crimes as there has been an increase in cyber-related crimes (Choo, 2016). In recent years, digital forensics has taken the front-row seats in solving crimes and helping the prosecution bring justice. One case where digital forensics has helped in solving the case is the Mikayla Munn case of 2016. Munn is a former University of
Manchester student who got pregnant, kept it a secret and after giving birth in a bath tab drowned her baby. Munn claimed that she did not know that she was pregnant and that labor kicked in while she was taking a bath and the baby was born there (O'Kane, 2017). She said that she used a shoelace to tie the umbilical code.
Munn and her baby were taken to the hospital where the baby boy was pronounced dead upon arrival. Due to the inconsistency in her story, the police launched
a further investigation into her case. Thanks to digital forensics, the police discovered that Munn had texted two men before the incident and told them that she was pregnant; the police believed that she believed that she suspected one of them was the father. It was also discovered that she had googled several things that suggested that she was well aware that she was pregnant and she was planning to kill her baby upon birth (Karie 2016). She googled “at home abortions” and “4
ways of cutting the umbilical cord of a baby”. The further investigation involved an autopsy on the baby which showed that the baby took a breath after birth before he drowned. Munn was found guilty and she was sentenced to nine years imprisonment after agreeing to a plea deal which saw her plead guilty of negligence.
