In 2014, JP Morgan Chase which is one of the hugest banks in United States suffered a major data breach that affected the accounts of more than 76 million households and 7 million small businesses. The attack had been going on for a month before it was identified in July. According to the bank, more than one million bank accounts were compromised. The company indicated that login information such as passwords and social se- curity numbers were not compromised. The attackers’ only gained access to the email addresses, phone contacts and addresses of account holders (Botha, 2017). Latest information on the incident revealed that the attack was more serious and affected more account holders than was earlier thought. The company immediately began working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in order to determine the root cause of the attack. Up to date, the company still experiences customer fraud that is associated with the data breach. JP Morgan Chase never indicated what the total cost of the data breach was but it indicated that it will be using $250 million annually to improve its security. Based on a study carried out by the Ponemon Institute, a data breach approximately costs $154 per record (Ablon, 2018). Based on the recent information which indicates that cumula- tively the data breach affected more than 83 million records, it is evident that the company made a huge financial loss (Schuessler, 2017). Based on the study, the approximate financial loss that the bank made was 83 million X $154 which is a staggering $12.782 billion. This is just an estimation and in reality, such high profile breaches even cost more. Just a few hours after the news of the data breach broke out, the shares of the company fell by 0.89%.
