Running Head: NEW ROLES BY ORACLE 12C 1

ORACLE 12C NEW ROLES 4

NEW ROLES BY ORACLE 12C

Venkatesh Bodhupally

NEW ROLES BY ORACLE 12C “In 2012, a report by Data Breach Investigation found that there was the breaching of more than 1 billion database records globally between the years 2004 to 2011” (Essawi, & Chigurupati, 2017). Oracle 12c therefore emerged and advanced security solutions. Auditing can be defined as the

process where configured database actions are monitored and recorded both from database users as well as no database users. The users who are recognized by the client identifier attribute are the ones referred to as the No database users”. Oracle Database Real Application Security is used in auditing this type of user. This can be done basing on individual actions like the SQL type statement executed, or combined data which includes the user name, application among many others. Auditing configuration can be done for both failed and successful activities. Many benefits come from performing audits. To begin with, Auditing is very helpful in that it allows companies to account for the actions of individuals. This may include the actions that are taken and affects specific content. “It also acts as a deterrent of intruders from performing actions that are not appropriate basing on their accountability” (Daghighi, 2019). The auditors will be notified of any action that is performed by users who are not authorized, and lastly, it becomes easier monitoring and gathering specific activities in the database. “The two roles AUDIT_ADMIN and AUDIT_VIEWER was purposely introduced to manage audit policies like the defined auditing, housekeeping initiation, as well as maintaining the data audit retention” (Ravikumar, et al., 2017). These new roles would make it easier for viewing and analyzing data for security reasons. AUDIT_VIEWER to be specific is a role that is suited for the

external auditors. AUDIT_ viewer is useful when it comes to viewing and analyzing audit data. This role does not, however, allow for users to be able to enable

and disable auditing on their objects. AUDIT _ADMIN is mostly used by administrators. It is very useful when it comes to configuring, audits as well as administration of both unified and fine-grained policies. It is also very important that administrators can view, and analyze audit data work done primarily by security administrators. In ensuring accountability, before an auditor can be able to perform any audit, they are first of all given the audit _admin role. This now ensures that an auditor can be able to easily create, alter, enable, disable and drop audit policies as well as be able to manage the trail of the unified audit. These two new roles have helped

simplify the configuration of database auditing in oracle 12c. This is because they are required to administer unified auditing. Apart from giving security administrators to easily configure audit policies, it gives ease of administration and flexibility. It only the database users who have these two new roles who can get the maintenance of the audit trail. The users can also be able to configure auditing to administer fine-grained audits as well as unified audits.
