Introduction
In the current world of information, technology leadership is significant. Leaders are required to have numerous sets of skills, both technical and non-technical.
The Chief Information Officer is an organizational leader whose responsibilities include delegating the task to the subordinates and make sure the organizational functions are running without any obstacle (Al-Taie, Lane, & Steel., 2014). Different technical and nontechnical skills are required by a CIO to operate efficiently.
Technical Skills are related to the functional area of the leaders. They are the company process of how the organization is operating or maybe problem-
solving techniques as per the company guidelines (McKeen, & Smith, 2015). Specialized knowledge is required to perform these skills. The technical skills that I
believe a CIO must have are described below: Computer and Digital Literacy – Technology has taken over almost all offices. Therefore, for one to be a good CIO,
they must have basic knowledge about computers and any digital media. These necessary skills involve using a search engine, email, internet, and a general understanding of web design. They should also have to have the general idea of the software that the company is using. Technical Writing and
Communication – The CIO communicates to the customer and employee about the goals, responsibilities of the organization. So, it is essential to use good writing and must able to communities with proper language and tone. I put communication in technical skills because communicating with different personal and organization requires a bit of expertise and ability that a CIO will acquire by more exposed to the world. Project Management - A good CIO coordinates the employs and tracks
the work done by each to find out the project completion time and efforts that are required to complete. Even though CIO won’t work directly to project management role, but knowledge about project management is very crucial to track the process of the project which is vital for decision making (Horlacher, & Hess, 2016). Data Management and Analytics - This is the most important for today’s CIO. A CIO must collect data and manipulates the data for critical decision-making process. If a
CIO doesn’t have that knowledge, then decision taken without managing the data might not be successful for the organization. Nontechnical Skills are generally developed with experience and some learning. They are self-taught and self-directed. The non-technical skills that a CIO should possess include: Delegation and
Empowerment - CIO cannot perform every task in an organization; therefore, he performs only the key responsibilities of the organization and delegates the rest
of them to the subordinates. This is important in an organization. Rather than micromanage, if a CIO delegates the responsibilities and judges the employee on the work performed will help to increase the trust of the employee (Lee, 2017). Commitment and Accountability - Having a passion for doing your work increases the willingness of the employee to perform the responsibilities with the same passion you have for your work. The CIO should be accountable for the outcome. A
good CIO takes more credit for blame and less credit for the success
Confidence, Honesty, and Integrity - A good CIO should be honest and should be able to work in a team which makes him/her succeed in the market along with the organization. It is also equally essential that CIO should be confident enough to take a decision and trust his judgment for success. Decision-Making Capabilities -
Decision is made every day in the organization by the CIO. Some are a routine decision, whereas some are a very crucial decision that will determine the success of the organization. He should possess the ability to take that critical decision. More research and in-depth knowledge are required to make such a decision. Conclusion
In conclusion, the above mentioned are the skills that are crucial to a CIO in the current world and are a must-have. These skills will help the CIO to grow
themselves as well as improves the organization to grow with their skills and abilities. While a company appoints a CIO, they must look for these skills critically
