to reduce IT expenses and enhance efficiency in a business environment. WesternDisk is a hypothetical business in the storage manufacturing industry,
and I will use the company to help understand the virtualization concept. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the learning concept regarding
server virtualization technology using Microsoft virtualization software from Windows Server and various components within the Windows System Center. Hence, this paper will address a hypothetical case study on how virtualization technologies can be implemented to benefit the organization.
Implementing Microsoft Virtualization Technologies
WesternDisk Inc. is a manufacturer of storage-related Technology Company .Their products involve all types of data storage designed for enterprise and
personal use. The company operates across the globe, in that employee offices, engineering, and manufacturing operations cut across the world.
Because of this global business entry, this requires WesternDisk Information Technology (IT) organization to provide IT related infrastructures in the Americas, Europe, and Asian continents. However, the physical IT resources today are sophisticated, not easily manageable, and hard to maintain across such broad locations. The company is considering implementing virtualization technologies to make its products and services easily accessible globally. The
company is interested in the application of virtualization technologies offered by Microsoft, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2012R2 and Microsoft System Center 2012R2 (Jain. 2016, March). to upgrade from the physical IT data centers to a virtual computing resources
Organization’s Preparedness for Virtualization. The current company IT resources were acquired from various organizations in the storage industry. The
company infrastructure layout is aging due to being in operation for a good period, and a gently need a system upgrade. For instance, the IT systems in
Asia consist of very old legacy servers. These legacy servers were put into production to house manufacturing and productivity applications. The
licensing costs of these applications are now being tested. They can be replaced and the data transferred to current WesternDisk Enterprise Resource
Planning (ERP) applications. IT-related components can be easily upgraded or dropped, thus makes it possible to convert the current physical data centers into virtualized computing resources instantly. Microsoft Licensing of Virtualized Environments
The Microsoft licensing structure of Windows Server 2012R2 is very flexible in many IT goals one wants to achieve. For example, the Operating System (OS) for Virtual Machines can be a mixture of Windows and Linux OSs. More so, the tools managing the virtualized environments can be crucial due to
management tools offering automation for consistency of many VM creation functions, monitoring the virtualized environment, enabling consistent automated patch management, and providing backup. Microsoft offers two license versions for Windows Server 2012R2, the Datacenter Edition, and the
Standard Edition (Jain. 2016, March). Each Windows edition supports Hyper-V, computer software that runs a virtual machine. The main benefit of the
Datacenter version is that it supports the creation of an unlimited number of licensed Windows Server VMs thus, whatever physical hardware support will automatically be licensed, no need to purchase an additional license for VMs Windows Server 2012R2 Standard edition supports a limited to two Windows Server VMs on the Host within the Windows Server OS. Users here are allowed to buy any OS licenses personally for VM OSs they may require (Nagesh et al., 2017). Shared Storage Considerations
Window Server 2012R2 supports all types of shared storage to store the virtual components managed by the Host. These include shared storage devices such as Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS) that utilize network protocols, and Windows File Servers that use SMB 3.0 protocols (Nagesh et al., 2017). The benefits of shared storage are; it is centralized for the highest utilization of available storage space; can be used as a
centralized backup solution, and enables easy migration of VMs between Hosts or Host groups. Building High-Availability (HA) into shared storage
SAN and NAS devices usually have HA capabilities built into them by their manufacturers, usually with redundant hardware controllers and multi-path connections to internal components. However, Direct Attached Storage (DAS) JBOD enclosures and physical servers with large capacities to house internal drives can also be configured with HA like features by utilizing the Windows Storage Spaces feature and enabling the File Server role on selected Hosts.

Compute also provides various cloud service models like PaaS and IaaS, and here is where customer applications and website hosting services reside.
The management of Azure Compute resources is managed by Fabric Controller and provides customers with the interface for scaling out additional computing resources when needed and releasing these additional computing resources when no longer required and also acts as a monitoring service in management service for all Azure computing resources (Afzal et al., 2020). be aware of Data Sovereignty laws. Customers are also provided with data import and export capability of their data. Lastly, Data Services can also act as

Azure’s data center environments. Hence, further reducing the need for large CAPEX costs requires creating links to geo-located Azure data centers and

create a WesternDisk Private cloud that enables on-demand provisioning, thus help to reduce IT-related tasks, reduce CAPEX, and OPEX costs by increasing the efficiency of existing physical hardware to extend the span and maximize ROI. Finally, a Hybrid cloud deployment model by linking the WesternDisk
Private cloud with Microsoft Azure’s IaaS Public cloud will greatly reduce CAPEX and OPEX costs using cloud bursting.
