This week we'll continue to explore how health policy and advocacy shape systems that directly affect our patient's lives.  Most importantly this article addresses some of our misguided approaches, and attempts to present some alternatives.  

After reading this article:

1. Tell us your thoughts.  What's your overall reaction to this article? Were you surprised that the initial interventions weren't successful?  

2. In your experience, can you think of other approaches that have seen success for reducing or eliminating barriers to care and health?  Any failures?

3. Students with healthcare experience from abroad, can you speak to any differences the United States and other countries in how healthcare and even social welfare systems are constructed?  In your experience which differences improve outcomes?

4. As an APRN or healthcare leader, how will you address unmet social needs with your patient population?
