Topic lead: Please discuss your experience to date caring for at risk populations.

What have you seen in clinical that has made you uncomfortable? Proud? Ashamed? Eager to do more or do better? Please discuss a negative example and then follow it with a positive example.

Neg: Uncomfortable I witnessed bullying during a rotation where (5) nurses (one being my nurse that I was following) gathered in the med room and spoke badly about another nurse was overweight. They called her many names that were bad and I can not mention.

Positive: I followed a nurse who was very cleanly. As soon as she received her Wow computer from her hand off nurse she cleaned it down. Than after almost every patient room we would come out into the hall and she would sanitize the computer down again prior to going into another patients room. I have never followed a nurse that was like her and I asked her why she was always constantly sanitizing. She told me if that was me or my family members would I like it if she came from a prior patient from a room who was positive with the flu and bring that same computer a few minutes later and touch me knowing that her computer was contaminated. Out of all my rotations she was the only nurse that I have ever followed that was that cleanly. When I told her that she was the only nurse have followed that was like her and she told me now knowing that “You decide what kind of nurse you want to be when you graduate!”

Where do you see our system failing vulnerable populations? Is there a population that you have seen our healthcare system provide appropriate safety nets for? If so what has worked and why?

The elderly. During a rotation I was in the ICU where and elderly pt was blind and deaf had no family by her bedside. The doctors tried multiple times to reach her children however no one answered. Maybe after an hour half of being up there she passed away by herself alone.

And finally, you were granted one magical wish. Because you are a kind person, you are going to use your one wish to fix our healthcare system. What would your one wish be and why?

Free healthcare for everybody regardless of you socioeconomic status. When I was younger I knocked out my front tooth and it was dangling by a root and both my parents were on night shift and my friend had to come and take me to the hospital and I was losing a lot of blood and they placed me in a holding room until my mother came to show proof that I had insurance. My mother at this time worked in Detroit and she was 30 minutes away if there was no traffic. She was livid when she got to the hospital and found out I wasn’t receiving care because they needed proof of insurance.
