Each has unique characteristics

Each has a different use in your structural choices

Main points should ALWAYS reflect your speech purpose

Example Main Points:

The first step in cutting a diamond is examination.

The second step in cutting a diamond is marking.

The third step in cutting a diamond is striking the stone.

Spatial or Geographic:

Location to location – this should make sense “in time”

Usually informative

Add examples & testimony

Example Main Points:

The interior of a castle is for living space.

The middle of a castle is for effective defense.

The exterior of a castle is for producing food.

Topical, categorical, and “reasons why”:

Breaks content into categories of related material.

Can be informative or persuasive.

Add examples & testimony & facts to fully explain.

Example Main Points:

Disney World is fun because of the variety of rides.

Disney World is fun because of the variety of activities.

Disney World is fun because of the variety of food.

Topical, categorical, and “reasons why”:

Breaks content into categories of related material.

Can be informative or persuasive.

Add examples & testimony & facts to fully explain.

Example Main Points:

You should support gun control for personal safety.

You should support gun control for family safety.

You should support gun control for community safety.

Main points should ALWAYS reflect your speech purpose

CAUSAL STRUCTURE:

2 and ONLY 2 main points.

Cause/ Effect or Effect / Cause

Usually persuasive, but can still be informative.

Example Main Points:

Global warming is caused by release of greenhouse gasses.

Global warming is having negative effects on the

climate.

Cause/ Effect or Effect / Cause

Usually persuasive, but can still be informative.

Example Main Points:

The Mayan Civilization experienced negative environmental effects.

The Mayan Civilization experienced negative effects caused by the misuse of their environment.

Must be a persuasive speech.

Your 4th speech MUST use this structure.

Example Main Points:

The Problem of gaming addiction is increasing in the US.

The Problem of gaming addiction can be solved by a three step program.

Must be a persuasive speech.

Your 4th speech MUST use this structure.

Problem:

Should clearly reveal a specific problem.

Should relate that problem to the audience.

Should show that the problem is significant - NEED.

Must be a persuasive speech.

Your 4th speech MUST use this structure.

Solution:

Should clearly map out a plan of action.

MUST be doable or possible with audience action.

Should clearly show how the problem is solved.

Should include “motivation” for your audience.
