Working with Diverse Populations in Health and Human Sciences
ORGANX PROJECT
Organizational Cultural Competency Exploration (CO1-4) Description M6O2 involves demonstrating your ability to synthesize organizational best practices for culturally competence services by completing ORGANX project. ORGANX relates to all course objectives and is an opportunity to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
1. Accurate knowledge of course concepts or theories 2. Exploration of cultural competence 3. Cross-cultural approaches to service delivery 4. Use of data to analyze contributing factors, disparities, and influence of systems and culture
Directions You will assess an organization’s cultural competency using the knowledge, tools, skills, and data you gained in the course. Choose an organization you are familiar with and interact with often, preferably the health care facility you work at or that you use for your own health. Other options are college, church, place of employment, gym, etc. You will assess the organization’s ability to deliver services that recognize and respect cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, traditions, language preferences, and health practices of diverse populations to improve health access and outcomes.
Step 1: Organization Description: Write an introduction to describe the organization, basic information, and your familiarity with it. Include data about the demographics of the geographic area the organization is in and demographics of the population it serves. 1-2 paragraphs.
Step 2: Informal Impressions: Briefly describe your anectodical impressions of the organization’s cultural competency. Based on your experiences with the organization, describe positive and negative features as related to their ability to meet the diverse population needs. In other words, from your unique vantage point of employee or patron, describe what you have noticed about the organization’s ability to deliver services that recognize and respect cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, traditions, language preferences, and health practices of diverse populations. Also describe what you noticed about their effectiveness in improving health access and outcomes for diverse populations. 2-3 paragraphs.
Step 3: Formal Assessment Strategy: Next, you will write how you will formally assess the organization. Imagine you are an auditor who has been hired to assess the cultural competency of the organization. You will need to plan how to complete a comprehensive and formal assessment. Specifically, create a formal assessment strategy (process and procedures) that involves at least three of the domains identified by Lewin that you deem appropriately apply to the organization. To do this, review Lewin’s approach, then identify three domains that relate to assessing the organization. Your assessment strategy must include two checklists/assessments. The first will be the ORGANX Checklist to Assess Service Delivery (see below). In addition, you will use the assessment located in chapter three of your text “Checklist of Recommended Organizational Level Actions” (Dreachslin & Foster Curtis, 2004). You are required to use Dreaschslin et al.’s checklist, yet If you prefer to research a different checklist (other than ORGANX assessment below), you will find assessments are available here: https://nccc.georgetown.edu/assessments/ Once you have settled on which checklists to use, describe your entire assessment strategy including who, how, when, where, and in what sequence the entire assessment process will be conducted. Executive meetings, surveys, documentation audits, observations, employee feedback, etc. are just a few steps that can be included in your strategy. Review your text for more ideas. Importantly, you must thoroughly describe how you will integrate the three Lewin domains within your assessment process. Watch the video tutorial for more information about this section. 3+ paragraphs.
Step 4: Assessment Completion and Outcomes: Using your imagination, complete the entire assessment strategy you created, including the checklists. You are not required to literally meet with the organization
executives, implement employee surveys, or other steps your formal assessment strategy involves. However, you are required to complete the checklists. In addition, based on your knowledge of the organization, you are required to imagine how the assessment would go and describe that in this section. Be sure to describe the outcomes of the two assessment tools (checklists) you completed. Describe the assessments you used and summarize what the assessment revealed. Include the assessment checklists in your submission as a second attachment. 2-3 paragraphs.
Step 5: Cross Model Application and Analysis: Next, apply the six stages of cultural competence in the Cross model to what you found from assessing the organization. In other words, use the Cross model to explain what the outcomes mean about the current status of organization cultural diversity. You may find it helpful to imagine community members who patronize the organization are reading this section, so you want to use the Cross model to help them more easily understand the outcomes of your formal assessment and what it means to them. 3-4 paragraphs.
Step 6: Strengths and Challenges Analysis. Based on what you found out, describe the strengths and areas for growth. You must use the HRSA goals and data gathered from your STAT-X* project as part of this section. 3- 4 paragraphs. Describe the following:
a. Which HRSA goals did the organization achieve and which goals does the organization need to more effectively implement? In other words, if the organization had the same goals as the HRSA, to what extent did it achieve those goals? https://www.hrsa.gov/about/index.html
b. Describe how well the organization recognizes and respects cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, traditions, language preferences, and health practices of diverse populations to improve health access and outcomes. Which HRSA goals should the organization use to improve any deficiencies in those areas?
c. * For five extra credit points possible, refer to the groups you researched for your STAT-X project. Based on the data you gathered from the STAT-x project, how does the organization measure up to servicing the 1) populations you researched 2) health disparities you found in those populations (if applicable). Next, describe strengths/challenges specific to the data found (if applicable).
Step 7: Recommendations. After careful consideration, determine four formal recommendations for the organization. You may find it helpful to imagine you are writing results of the assessment to provide to the organization for feedback. As part of the results, you are obligated to provide recommendations and resources. Recommendations should focus on 1) Improving service delivery to meet the needs of diverse populations and 2) Actively working to reduce health disparities and access to quality services. Your recommendations may address changes in organizational mission, policies, procedures, staffing patterns, position descriptions, personnel performance measures, delivery of service, costs and qualifications for services, outreach and dissemination approaches, composition of advisory boards and committees, professional development and in- service training activities, or telecommunication systems. 2+ paragraphs
Step 8: Resources. Describe four resources that would be helpful to this organization to. Specifically, focus on resources for the organization to 1) improve cultural competency and 2) contribute to reducing health disparities. Refer to resources in the text or found elsewhere during this course or on the web. For example, perhaps one of your trainings described resources you can mention for this section. 2-3 paragraphs. Format Write your findings in a coherent, clear paper. Label each section with the same labels used above. You can single or double space your writing, however TNR, 12-point font must be used, with 1-inch margins. Paragraphs should be at least 6-10 sentences in length.
