Organizing and articulating a persuasive response to the opposition of an argument Create an MLA style document. Read pp. 98-99 "Sentence Variety and Structures for Argument," specifically the "Strategies for Argument" in the Writing & Research Handbook. This will give you some sentence constructions to formulate your rebuttal. Read the Argument Outline, which contains your position in the Thesis Statement. This is what you are trying to prove. Read the 2 Counter Arguments, which show your opponent's position. Choose either Counter Argument #1 or Counter Argument #2 and write your choice as the title. Write one paragraph that includes:

A statement of the opposition's claim that makes it clear this opposition is different from your position. A rebuttal, also known as a refutation, that proves the opposition's claim to be wrong, false, or flawed. OR If you cannot provide a rebuttal, you can make a concession. A concession explains that the opposition has merit, but that your argument also has merit as well.

Argument Outline:

Thesis Statement: The production, sale, and possession of assault weapons for private citizens should be banned in the U.S. Supporting Claim #1: Keeping assault weapons out of private citizensʼ hands can lower the increasing occurrences of barbaric public slayings. Supporting Claim #2: The ban on assault weapons is backed heavily by public opinion, major organizations, and even law enforcement. Supporting Claim #3: The monetary and human costs incurred by crimes committed with assault weapons are too great to ignore.

Counter Argument #1

W. Opposition s̓ Claim: Strict gun control laws won't affect crime rate. X. Rebuttal or Concession:

Counter Argument #2

W. Opposition s̓ Claim: Outlaws would still own guns.

X. Rebuttal or Concession:

Requirements:

The document must be in MLA style and uploaded as .doc or .docx. There is no word count for this assignment. You're required to write one entire paragraph, which includes the opposition you did not write, but the rebuttal or concession you did write. Please use hypothetical examples to support the argument.

Do not use any outside sources. Do not include a works cited page. Even though everyone is submitting a paragraph with the same opposition, TurnItIn, our plagiarism checker, will be enabled for this assignment. You may notice a higher score because of the shared sentences. Please read your TurnItIn reports. It is fine if you do not share the values in these claims. This is practice. You do not have to personally believe any of these claims.
