Assignment W4: Elements of Effective Communication

Purpose of the Assignment:

The assignment is designed to provide learners the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to critically compare and contrast empathetic and critical listening, develop guidelines for evaluating speaker’s message critically discuss the significance of non-verbal behaviour in a specific organization or career field and explore language as a cause of miscommunication.

Individual Report

The Report contains parts A and B

Part A

Please critically compare and contrast empathic and critical listening. Please design a set of guidelines for evaluating speaker’s message but also note when it would be fitting to withhold judgment.

Please give examples of four types of nonverbal behaviour and summarize the importance of each in a specific organization or career field.

Part B

Please explain why language is often a cause of miscommunication across cultures. What can international managers do to minimize communication problems that stem from language difference?

Please provide examples of strategies to overcome common barriers to effective communication in the contemporary organisational context.

Credit will be given for evidence of:

 Library/Internet based research. Try to use a mixture of resources - books, articles as well as the internet.

 Understanding of the issues raised by the questions.

 Originality and a critical and questioning approach. It is important to be objective and to support statements with evidence.

 A logical structure and well-argued conclusion.
