Organizational Culture
Organizational culture does not solely determine the productivity of an organization but it influences the personal and professional life of an employee critically. Organizational culture encapsulates the conviction, ideologies, values, and principles that an organization follows including its employers and employees. Many organizations have managed to foster the prolific organizational culture providing fair and equal opportunities to its employees. Fortune 500 is known for positing the list of ranking 500 largest companies across the world that are generating an overwhelming amount of revenues every year, keeping themselves intact by implementing innovation. Fortune list these companies without any biases or inclination towards a particular firm. Fortune 500 helps the investors to make a cautious decision regarding their investment and trust the companies by taking the support of their meticulous observation. Some of the companies that repeatedly gain a high ranking in the Fortune 500 list include Twitter, Google Zappos and Southwest Airlines. Taking a glance at this list might drive us to think that the technology firms are more likely to secure their ranking in fortune 500, however, it is not a case. Technology does consider as a crucial factor these days and almost all the biggest and renowned organizations around the world are employing it but this does not signify that solely tech-based firms glean place in Fortune 500. The companies that I have opted to discern their culture and compare them with my convictions are Walmart ($500,343 million in 2018), Toyota Motor ($265,172 million in 2018) and Royal Dutch Shell ($311,870 million in 2018) (HITT, MILLER, & COLELLA, 2011).
Organizations in Fortune 500
The opted companies for this analysis have maintained their ranking in the list of 500 biggest companies in the world for many years.
Walmart
Walmart’s relentless success and perpetual growth at international market profoundly reflect its organizational culture. It exudes how it helps them to gain a competitive advantage. Walmart is a customer oriented company which always try to glean competitive advantage by providing unprecedented services to its customers. Moreover, Walmart deals in diversified product structure depicting its vehement concern towards the individual needs, thereby depicting its respect for the individual. Walmart relentless success depicts its struggle towards excellence without compromising the integrity. All these values of Walmart make it one of the biggest well-reputed organization in the world. Walmart has never been reckless when it comes to the employees of the company. Walmart has identified the real intrinsic value of its employees and always shows care towards them (Walmart, 2018).
Toyota motors
Toyota’s philosophy, Toyota’s vision, Toyota’s code of conduct, Toyota’s guiding principles each one of Toyota’s strategy reflects a highly coherent organizational culture. Toyota’s expect stark faithfulness from its employees, and works, Toyota assimilate and implement creativity and strives to stay ahead of the times. Toyota always believes in making a rational decision and avoid frivolousness. Toyota provides a congenial atmosphere to its employees and always give respect. Even though Toyota is operating in the contemporary world, it still follows the primary principles of its founder Sakichi Toyoda, which reflects the consistency of the organization. Toyota has invincible philanthropic relationships with the community, in addition, they also sponsor various activities across the world such as Olympics and Paralympics, which flaunts the diversification of the activities in which Toyota involved itself primarily to make a substantial contribution within the society. All these values and principles of Toyota depicts its tendency towards the society and the deep concern of Toyota towards the people and society. It deems like Toyota is perpetually trying to make this world a better place to live (Toyota, n.d.).
Royal Dutch Shell
Royal Dutch Shell is another apt example of innovation and corporate social responsibility. Despite the turbulent energy industry Shell has managed to retain its ranking in the fortunes list of 500 global companies for the 24th time in 2018. It’s no secret that the vehement fluctuation in oil and gas prices turn the petroleum refining industry vulnerable, however, Shell’s strategies and values are always proved to be an impetus for its profits and overall growth. Shell’s core values are integrity, respect, and honesty. All the laws, principles or code of conduct is fostered and then reinforced based on the preceding four values. Shell’s ethical behavior is a most plausible example for all the companies around the world. Integrity, honesty, and respect are deeply embedded in the strategies of Shell. Shell bolster openness, trust, professionalism, and teamwork. Shell always cares for an environment, thereby, Shell always struggles to discover or invent the efficient means of energy. Shell believes in sustainable development, integrating economic, social and environmental consideration while making decisions. Shell has an international membership of various companies such as United Nations, World Economic Forum, and many others exuding Shell’s interest in world affair and its endeavor to make this world a better place to live (Shell, n.d.).
All three companies have different means of contributing towards the society, however, the impeccability of an organizational culture of each of the preceding organization is profound. Hence, their culture has enabled them to maintain their place in the fortune 500 ranking for many years.
My Ideal Organization
After gleaning and experience working in a company, I have discerned some key aspects that I would prefer in the organizational culture where I would like to work. Furthermore, I have also conducted a corporate culture preference test that has revealed some more preferences that I would like to see in my ideal organization. The type of organizational culture that I would like to prefer is relationship culture. Relationship culture values the wellbeing and nurturing. It is based on fairness, explicit communication, teamwork, and sharing the crucial aspects of organizational life. Moreover, my preferred culture is a performance culture that values individual and organizational performance and always strive for the efficiency and effectiveness. Moreover, I would prioritize the control culture in my ideal organization where the role of senior is deemed imperative to lead the organization. In this way, all the employees would get proper guidelines and deploy under control. Organizational culture reflects the future of an organization. It does not depict the contemporary performance, however, it definitely has long-term influences. Thereby, analyzing the organizational culture before becoming a part of it is crucial.

Conspicuously, all the opted organizations mentioned above are highly in alignment with my preferred elements of organizational culture. All three organizations Walmart, Toyota Motors and Royal Dutch Shell are highly renowned and well-reputed organizations that are maintaining their performance for years. For instance, all three organizations have a common facet of social responsibility in their values as all of them show deep concerns towards environmental and other social issues. However, after delving into the set of values of each one of them I have deduced that Toyota Motors is more inclined towards philanthropy than the rest two. Moreover. Walmart is more versatile towards fulfilling the customer’s needs than the rest. Thereby, we can say at this point that values and other facets integrated into the organizational culture are pretty much same for all the preceding organizations, however, the vehemence of these facets vary organization to organization, for instance, Toyota Motors is more inclined towards explicit philanthropy than the rest. No organization has partnered with the world humanitarian organizations such as the United Nations than Toyota Motors. Likewise, the corporate social responsibility of Royal Dutch Shell and its tendency to foster teamwork, honesty, and openness is what I would prefer in my ideal organization with flawless organizational culture. On the other hand, one of the elements of my compatibility with Walmart is caring for customers which is another facet of maintaining the relationship. Walmart is known to depict deep concern for its employees as well by giving them generous benefits. I would have to join one of the preceding organizations to boost my professional career. I would like to be a part of Royal Dutch Shell. Shell has the highest extent of compatibility with my personal values.
Many organizations around the world are best known for their organizational culture such as Apple, Google, Facebook etc. (other than those I have opted for analysis). In terms of performance, it is profound that all these companies have maintained their high performance for years that is why they have ranked in the Fortune 500. Walmart deems the most performance oriented company among the opted ones. Hence, it aligns with my preference of performance culture. But Shell has not starkly ignored this element and so is for Toyota. Among all three of the Shell is the one which has a great extent of alignment with my personal values including the relationship and performance culture, therefore I would like to be a part of Shell.
