WORD CHOICE AND IMAGERY
The choice context of word choice is a tremendous stylistic device that differentiates different works of arts including poems, plays and short stories. The selection of certain words to use in a writing a specific literary work makes them more interesting and unique. This helps to showcase the thematic goal of the work of art thereby making the production interesting and attractive to read.
One short story
Short stories are the most interesting works of art which contain a special story that is short that teach moral lessons to the various ways of behavior of people in the society. Most short stories are meant to teach morality though they may contain certain scenes which are very interesting to read attracting the attention of the reader. As the reader concludes the reading of the short story he is expected to interpret the story in real life by obtaining the theme of the story and comparing it with normal life scenarios and occurrences. Thus short stories contain strong thematic goals either to scorn, teach, or lead people in doing good behaviors that are praised in the society while avoiding other forms of behavior which are not good.
Use of imagery and word choice applies to short story stories in a special way. To begin with, word choice in short stories create a substantive data and proof of a certain topic or idea being discussed in the work of art. For examples there are various words which when used creating a visual in the mind of the reader as he or she reader through the entire story. Word choice implies the use of various stylistic devices of word formations to create a mental picture to the reader on what the subject is aiming at teaching the people. The main goal of word choice is short stories is to differentiate the short stories art from other works of art by using special connotations and imagery to develop vivid description of a work of art. In order to bring forth the message of the short story certain words are used to create an imaginary reality occurrence in the mind of the reader in order to clearly understand subject of the work of art. For example there is use of similes and such as the following explanations:
· The man was as furious as a lion.
· The cat stood with two legs in the air.
· The woman kicked the basket like a football in the air.
The above similes support the major claims of the thematic goal of the short story by drawing the attention of the reader closer to imagine the various occurrences discussed above. For example to indicate bravery the a character may be described as a lion such as the man is a lion and this may be used to support the theme of the short story which might be how bravery may help us to overcome certain fears that we encounter in real life scenarios.
Nevertheless, structure of a short story uses long sentences which are used to explain the ideas being discussed by the writer. Thus use of imagery and word choice is unique in this setting because there are particular phrases, idioms and vocabularies that will be used to ground the detailed explanation of the theme of the story. This is the major difference between the short stories and other works of art such as plays and poems. However, the use of imagery is similar as used with other works of art such as poems and plays. The major concern of imagery is creating a visualization of the imaginary scenario being addressed poem. For example the use of connotation can be used to actively explain the various contexts
One poem
Poems are unique works of arts which are created in a most special way. A poem is a combination of short sentences which are organized in special lines which are grouped into various paragraphs known as stanzas. They may also contain a refrain which is repeated after every stanza of even in the last line of every stanza. Poems use short words as said above to represent big stories in represent big stories in real life occurrence.
As a result the choice of words as used in poems is strategically chosen in order to represent the large context of words by a small text. For this reason the use of connotation and imagery is widely applied in poems than in any other literary writing works. The thematic goal of the poem is supported by the use of contextual word choice and literary skills such as rhythm, tone, mood, attitude among many other styles of art. All these styles are chosen strategically to represent the various works of art in the society. For example the use of imagery in poems can be devised by
· Rhythm
· Assonance
· Alliteration
· Repetition
· Use of a pair of rhyming words
Nevertheless, since the use of imagery is a core foundation in the writing of poetry, the large part of the sentences are made up of imaginative writings and explanations. For example in the poem below:
“You do not have to be good
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert repenting
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
Love what it loves
Tell me about the despair, yours, and I will tell you mine
Meanwhile the world goes on
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
Are moving across the landscapes
Over the prairies and the deep trees
The Mountains and the rivers”
Poem name - wild geese by Mary Oliver
In the poem above, the use of imagery has successfully been applied. This poem is known as wild geese and it illustrates the relationship between the human beings and nature. It also showcase the likeness of humans to an animal the wild geese and how we ought to be like the wild geese in case we have problems in life. The choice of words gives us in this poem gives us a clear visual experience of the relationship between humans and nature thus making it look more attractive and appealing to read. Moreover the use of imagery in poems is dynamic. The choice of words can be used to express sadness, sorrow or joy and happiness and this depends on the experience of the reader.
One Play
On the same note, connotation and denotation are majorly used to substantiate the thematic goal which is brought about play. Plays are written scripts of the various conversations between people in the society. Plays have more than one character and thus there are various personalities that can be described as having various attributes and moral position in the society. The use of denotations can be used to directly outline the characters of the various persons featured in the play. In contrast connotations are used to show the comparison of a person using emotional variances such as the one shown below:
· That boy is pig headed
· That boy is strong-willed
The above two sentences are both connotations because they connotative the behavior of the boy. However the two are contrasted since one is a positive statement while the other one is a negative statement even though both the two statements are used to mean the same thing. However the first one can be interpreted that the boy is stubborn in a bad way while the second one is used to show that he is stubborn but in a good way. Hence connotations present imagery in two ways either positive or negative statements.
In conclusion the use of imagery and word choice has successfully been attributed to present the thematic goal of literary works of writings as discussed above in the three writings including poem, play and short stories.
