Pick ONE question to handle in four pages

PROMPT #1: King’s essay [“Why We Crave Horror Movies"] focuses on the benefits of watching horror films. What are other practices we have that on the surface may seem inconsequential but actually serve an important purpose? Select one such practice, and write an essay in which you identify its causes and effects. Conduct an Internet search on your topic, and use credible references to support your theories. Try to use relevant, vivid imagery, as King does, to engage your audience.

PROMPT #2: Now that you know about the “backfire effect” [from “How Facts Backfire"], visit the website urbanlegends.about.com. Pick one urban legend, and write an essay examining why you think this urban legend could be taken seriously. Alternatively, you may write an essay examining a different myth or suspicion with which you have personal experience, arguing why you or someone you know takes this suspicion seriously.
