Mistakes are inextricable in our spheres of life. No matter how much we try, mistakes are bound to be made. The mistakes we make in life come with lessons that should not be ignored. While some mistakes may teardown our spirit, we should be able to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off with more resilience and determination to handle more challenges that come our way (Mankad, Hoey, Jones, Tirukonda, & Smith, 2009).

We all have had our shares of mistakes, and I am no exception. I vividly remember my high school moments. John, a classmate, and a friend always doing his best to keep me on track. He was passionate about studies and could never fail to emphasize on the need of scoring best grades that would see us to college. I, On the other hand, was more passionate about sports. John was celebrated for winning class academic trophies as much as I was celebrated for being a star in co-curriculum activities. This made our friendship even stronger. We were both school heroes in our own different ways. Little did I know I was sacrificing my academic grades for sports.

On our final year in high school pressure was pilling up, the need to score good grades was imminent. John with his chauvinistic nature had no problem attaining the much-needed grades. My performance was on the losing end. Sporting had taken much of my time, it was then that I realized that most of my assignments were never submitted. I had a lot of correction to make and time was running out. The inevitable was going to happen; I was going to fail.

John proceeded to college. It took me long before I could find my calling. Talent does not pay, at least that is what I thought, but I am glad I was wrong. A year later, I received a scholarship to join the national sporting club and later joined the National basketball team.

Today as I receive my state commendation trophy for being the best basketball player of the year, I am glad that I chose this part. Ignoring academics was a regrettable mistake but choosing sports also proved valuable.
