Analysis

This is an article that is discussing those people who usually dump their left overs in dumping sites not knowing what they have dumped is something precious to someone. This is usually with college students since they don’t contribute buying those products. Any minute problem with their foodstuffs guarantees them to dispose off even if they are not done with it. This article is called. ‘On Dumpster Diving’ by Lars Eighner.

Thesis

The thesis of this article is that, one man’s poison is another man’s food. What you may perceive to be a poison to you, it may turn out to be very precious to someone else. I really agree with the author’s assertion since this is part of life and what people do undergo each day. There are those people who feed from dumpster and they are very well health wise.

Supporting arguments

One of the arguments is that, quite a number of people not all of them of the bohemian type, are willing to brag that they found this or that piece in the trash. The other supporting argument is, ‘perhaps everyone who has a kitchen and a regular supply of groceries has at one time or another made a sandwich and eaten half of it before discovering mold on the bread or got a mouthful of milk before realizing the milk had turned. The other point is that, yoghurt, cheese and sour cream are items that are often thrown out while they are still good. The last argument is that, ‘canned goods, for example, turn up fairly often in the dumpsters I frequent. These arguments are not persuasive since they are not directing what should be done but instead embracing what happens.

Definition

To me, this concepts means that, people can never be the same in this life. There are those who have and there are those who lack. For things to be okay, there has to be these two types people, the haves and have nots.

Vocabulary

Scavenging

It is in the first line and second paragraph of the article. Scavenging is feeding on anything you come across and its synonym forager. It is a verb. That hyena was scavenging on this carcass.

Scrounging

It is in the first line and in the second paragraph of the article. It is means to find something out of generosity of someone and its synonym is beg. He has been scrounging for the last one year.

Foraging

It is in the second line of second paragraph of the article. It means to gain something out of searching and its synonym is hunting. These birds have been foraging insects.

Critical thinking

These terms are very important since they are trying to relate the life of people out there especially those who survive from dumpsters. Actually the terms are describing the kind of challenges they undergo to gain something to feed on. It is something that happens across the world and therefore, one should not be amazed when he finds someone feeding from dumpsters.

Analysis

This article is trying to define poverty. Actually, poverty can be described differently depending on what one is undergoing. Poverty can be in form of finance, property or even healthy. The article is titled, ‘What is Poverty’ by Jo GODDWIN PARKER. Actually, this is very true, and those suffering from poverty do undergo these challenges. They lack what to wear, what to eat and even they lack job.

Thesis

The thesis of this article is that, poverty can make a homeless family focus on a black future. This actually true since such a family usually dreams of making it in life forgetting that, they even lack the basic commodities. It is not that, things can never change but actually sounds a big joke focusing on a black future while poor. This is a direct thesis. I really agree with the author’s assertion of this term.

Supporting arguments

In this article, there are couple of supporting arguments that are supporting the thesis. One argument from the articles is that, ‘I listened politely, the poor are always polite’. The second argument is that, ‘poverty is seeing your children forever with running noses’. The third point is that, ‘or they will turn to the freedom of alcohol or drugs and find themselves enslaved. Then the fourth argument is, ‘some of you say that you would do something in my situation and may be you would, for the first week or the first month, but for year after year? These arguments are not persuasive since they are just explaining about how poverty will make you focus on black future.

Definition

To me poverty is when you are lacking something especially the basic needs. It is expected that, each household should cater for basic needs and if a situation reaches and you find you can’t raise for basic needs, then that is poverty.

Sheeting

It is in the second line of second last paragraph. Sheeting means to do something that will interfere with normal routine and its synonym is blunder. It is an adjective. He has been sheeting with our plan all this time.

Screening

It is in the second line at the second last paragraph. Screening means to test for presence or absence of a disease and its synonym is vetting. It is a verb. When screening is taking place, no one is allowed to enter.

Malnutrition

It is in the fifth line and fifth paragraph of the article. Malnutrition means lack of proper nutrition and its synonym is malnourished. It is a noun. Mortality rate has increased due to malnutrition.

Critical thinking

This is very important to the society since people should understand that, poverty is among people. There is no point, a poor man will live a happy life. The fact that a poor man is lacking, it will be a constant reminder of the problems following him. Each part of the world, there are poor people and this actually balances the equation. The lack of basic needs actually means poverty.
