Contents of the Information System
Walmart makes use of an information system known as Data Café (Collaborative Analytics Facilities for Enterprise). This is the organization's analytics center, which is located in the organization's headquarters in Arkansas. Walmart's Data Café is the world's most enormous private cloud, processing 2.5 petabytes of data per hour (Grover et al., 2018). This information system analyzes data collected at all Walmart locations to provide real-time marketing, merchandising, pricing, and stocking. The organization is better able to anticipate the desires and needs of its millions of customers due to the use of this information system. The system at Wal-technology Mart is critical to ensuring the company's profitability by meeting customer demands.
Advantages of the Information System
A data cafe can manage, supervise, and monitor multiple transactions simultaneously to determine which are more critical than others. It can make business decisions to ensure the well-being and stability of those involved in the activity and assist others. It also allows for the automation of operational tasks within an organization (Walmart, 2021). Because of this system's ability to complete work for others automatically, Walmart can save significant amounts of money on labor costs.
During sales, customers can quickly pay with their Visa cards, eliminating the need for physical cash. Customers can complete this transaction thanks to Data Café's integration with the banking system. The integration of the system with Walmart's human resource management system allows the company to assess and improve employee performance. Information management can use this to reward highly competitive employees while letting go of those who are not.
All data collected during sales activities is analyzed by the data café, assisting management in making critical sales decisions. Customer preferences, demand, demographics, and willingness to pay are just a few of the most important pieces of customer data that any organization must have to increase sales. By processing and visualizing this data, Walmart can better understand its customers' locations, product preferences, and most pressing needs.
It also allows them to identify which areas generate the most and most negligible revenue (Walmart, 2021). Walmart management can maintain sales by heavily investing in strategic geographic areas or low-sales areas to grow even more. This data is used by Walmart management to make critical decisions. A single business information system coordinates all Walmart functional departments to integrate all business functions to improve overall business competence.
Walmart benefits from data cafe services because they provide the information needed to identify their weak points. Walmart can use this data to boost productivity, streamline business processes, and make better decisions. As a result of this data, Walmart will better understand its customers (Walmart, 2021). Furthermore, this system provides the resources required for product promotion and sales. The Data Café at Walmart is highly beneficial in all aspects of the company's business operations (i.e., operations, advertising, finance, accounting, and human resource).
In addition to this, it helps optimize business operations and collect data for decision-making at all levels of management, from the top down. By utilizing Data Café, Walmart's sales department can increase its business operations and decision-making efficiency, giving it a competitive advantage in the marketplace (Grover et al., 2018). It also enhances sales activities such as invoice automation and cashier sales.
Limitations and Risks of the Information System
All Walmart employees must first complete a mandatory training session before they can use this system. The vendor is in charge of Data Cafe support and maintenance.
Integrating an information system necessitates the use of costly software, hardware, and human resources. Rental, purchase, and support of software, hardware, and certain other services should be available. Employees who are unfamiliar with new information technology and software must be trained.
The digital world is vulnerable to a wide range of cyber-attacks, which could jeopardize the personal information of millions of people around the world. According to the Federal Trade Commission, information security is both a regulatory requirement and a mandate for businesses to protect their customers' and organizational data from unauthorized third-party access (Grover et al., 2018). Organizations face severe consequences for any discrepancy, including regulatory fines and noncompliance penalties.
Identity thieves and hackers obtain personal information, whereas corporate saboteurs target sensitive company data. This data includes vendor information, bank records, intellectual property, and personal information about company management (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). The data is then disseminated via the Internet, sold to competing businesses, or used to smear the company's image and reputation. For example, hackers recently targeted several retail chains, stealing customer data from their computer systems and disseminating Social Security and credit card numbers across the Internet.
Any Other Analysis You Would Like To Conduct Regarding the Information System
Walmart typically stores and organizes data using a data cafe system; this is the medium through which they do so. This information could include details about a customer's previous transactions or purchasing habits. Everything from cost management to scheduling to customer data is compiled into helpful information that can be shared (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). The system would be in charge of keeping this information up to date and making it available to anyone who needs it.
The fundamental structure of a data cafe system consists of three levels. The user interface, or UI, is the most critical component because it is how actors interact with the system. The computational section generates the answers or prepares the data returned in response to the query, followed by the presentation section—finally, the system's knowledge component stores knowledge or accurate information to respond to user inquiries. An information system is software that allows massive amounts of data to be organized and analyzed.
Data Café would be Walmart's nervous system if it were a person (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). The data café acts as Walmart's memory, storing all of the company's data systematically. It is the nerve center of the organization because it is in charge of ensuring that information flows freely between departments. Consider an organization to be a value chain, with its various components interacting to create value; Data Café serves as the glue that holds it all together.
