Log: Immigration, Race, and Oppression

Immigration, race and oppression are critical in the education of children. Among the main principles that need to be taught about immigration are immigration, the effects of immigration to the giving and receiving country, and the challenges immigrants face in the new countries. Contemporarily, immigration cases are high, especially in Europe and North America, due to increasing human crises such as hunger, wars, and political instability in their home countries. Apart from relocating to new countries due to human crises, immigrants immigrate to employment and better education. Their native countries are at risk of losing skilled human resources. To the countries receiving immigrants, they have to battle with an economic burden to meet the basic needs of the immigrants.

On the other hand, race denotes the classification of human beings based on their shared physical and social traits. Racism is a result of different race races. In American society, the race is pervasive. Many people are denied access to important social services such as education and health (Wilderman and Wang, 2017). In schools, it is common for black students to be suspended from schools than whites due to racism. Racism limits the opportunities of racial minority groups. They have less opportunity to excel in life, and some usually drop out of school. Oppression is the unfair treatment of certain members or groups in society. It is a result of differences that exists among the people.

Indeed, the cases of immigration have increasingly become high, and at the moment, immigration in itself is a crisis. Globally, many countries are experiencing political instabilities while others face the threat of terrorism. Consequently, terrorism and political instability are among the leading causes of immigration in different places. Also, while immigrants move in search of improved living conditions, they often meet numerous obstacles in foreign countries. The obstacles include continued marginalization from the native citizens. As highlighted, they have to strain to make ends meet or surrender to oppression in the new countries. The challenges immigrants face are similar to those faced by racial minorities. They are forced to live as second citizens even in the most democratic countries like the United States. In that state, accessing the basic services is difficult as provided. At that juncture, they automatically become the oppressed groups. In other words, the immigrants and individuals from racial minority groups are part of the oppressed groups.

Based on the discussion on the main principle, attention has to be directed towards securing a better life for the immigrants and racial minorities. It is essential that, after a series of suffering in their native countries, the immigrants should be protected from continued discrimination in the countries they seek asylum (Schmidt, 2019). That demands the respective governments to put in place measures that support the welfare of the immigrants. Lastly, everyone must resist racial discrimination to secure the wellness of everyone in society.

Log: Addressing Racism and Classism in Schools Today

Racism and classism are having huge impacts on the American education system. Racism in school is whereby children are treated based on their race affiliations by their educators (Brooks & Watson, 2018). It includes giving harsher punishments to children from racially marginalized groups. It could also involve rewarding students' grades based on their race (Brooks & Watson, 2018). Some students form study groups based on their races. The white students may be unwilling to mix freely with their peers from the black communities. Classism is prejudice based on class. In the American education system, classism is widespread. Students from rich backgrounds attend schools equipped with enough resources for their learning. On the other hand, students from low-income families attend schools with inadequate learning resources. The result of the disparities in the academic marginalization of students from poor societies as they are unable to compete with their peers from rich backgrounds effectively.

One way to deal with racism in school is to change policies that are traditionally against some races. Educators should speak up against curriculum policies that limit some of their students' success. On the other hand, classism can be dismantled in schools by offering free education to students from humble backgrounds. In addition, the students should be offered enough learning resources.

It is indeed true that while schools work towards embracing diversity, there are traditional obstacles that limit the success of multicultural education. Racism in America continues to be the main issue facing the American education system (Crutchfield et al., 2020). It is a historical problem that has faced the country ever since independence. As noted, racism manifests in different forms and could be prompted by the educators, the school curriculum, or the students. The school curriculum can promote racism by promoting the recognition of one race over the other.

In contrast, the students can promote racism by refusing to associate with learners from other racial groups. As provided, racism can be tackled in schools by eliminating policies that contribute to it. To add to the information provided, racism can also be eradicated by encouraging students to work together. The teachers should assign members from different races to discussion groups to enhance the collaboration of the learners.

Classism is also an issue in the education system that deters the achievement of multicultural education. Parents from rich backgrounds take their children to expensive and equipped schools, while those from poor backgrounds take their children to impoverished schools. As suggested, the problem can be handled by equipping every school in the country. To add to that, classism can be discouraged in schools by lowering school fees in all schools so those from low-income families can afford them.
