Reflection Essay: Service-Learning Experience

Personal reflection has significant roles in the process of learning. The process is critical in the learning experience since it allows implementing an effective plan for learners' knowledge delivery (Smit & Tremethick, 2017). Such reflection mainly aims at assessing the acquirement experience through outlined module activities and learning materials. It also facilitates identifying growth opportunities and eliminates possible errors that may arise in the future in teaching (Smit & Tremethick, 2017). The reflection on the service-learning experience will form the basis of this paper. Therefore, this reflective essay paper serves the purpose of discussing personal and professional developments in light of the community as discussed below;

Name, Mission, Services, and Programs of the Organization

The organization's name was Metropolitan Ministries. Its mission aims at caring for the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless in the community. It achieved this by alleviating suffering, promoting dignity, and instilling self-sufficiency as an expression of the ongoing ministry of Jesus Christ. The services were designed to help the homeless and children and families at risk of becoming homeless regardless of how much they need.

Setting, Activities, Duties, and Responsibilities

Community service allowed me to learn more about theory and practical. For instance, on my first day of service, I was assigned duties at the thrift store where I sort, hung, and price donated clothes. The community members donated the clothes. I sorted them concerning their types, e.g., sweaters, dresses, shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, etc. The priced clothes with a range of $1.00 - $4.00 were hung in the store awaiting buyers. While sorting, I ensured only decent clothes were selected.

On the second day, I was under the outreach program. I was taken to a kitchen containing most types of groceries, where I was entitled to distribute food to individuals who were listed. Most of the people were expected to report after every two weeks for pick up. The provision of food was based on household size, and each house was given a box of assorted foods like bread, cereals, canned foods, etc., and another box containing dairy products like eggs, milk, cheese, and an inclusive of fresh vegetables. We also assisted the members by taking the boxes into their cars. Moreover, the hygiene packages containing usual deodorants, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, tampons, pads. The hygiene products for men were also similar though they were provided together with shaving cream, mouth wash, etc. Families with children were provided with diapers, tissue, and shampoo for the babies.

On the third day of the community service, I was assigned to a pretty simple task. I was entitled to signing the families in and out of the compound, noting down their reasons for leaving the compound, noting the time in and time out checked temperature upon entry into the compound. Some families took their children to family outings while others were actually on the way to work. I was really impressed upon seeing that the program had already provided resources for children and families to do out of the Church.

On the last day, I was again taken to the outreach sector. Therefore, I requested to be taken to the daycare section; however, my request was denied due to the Covid-19 pandemic (Hepburn, et al., 2016).

Learning Goals and Objectives

My main objective was to gain more knowledge in the learning areas. I felt like these people needed my help. My main passion is mainly children. After working with the community of homeless families, this made me realize that we have to assist their parents for the children to better off.

Homelessness

Homelessness is a major problem among the community under study. Most of the children and even the families lack residential areas 

Acquired Skills

From the community service work, I realized that after helping the children in the home, we need to help their parents better off.
