Title: The Struggle of Race and Gender in Psychology
Proposal: The works of women and people from minority ethnic groups should be studied to determine their contribution in the field of psychology.
Research question: Would have the inclusion of women and the minority ethnic groups in the study of psychology changed the course of psychology?
Statement: The discipline of psychology has struggled with the ethical and fair treatment of people from diverse backgrounds and women entering or working in this field since it was founded.
I. Introduction
A. The issue of racism has barred intelligent individuals from accessing and making their contributions in the field of psychology in the United States.
B. The notion of women’s inferiority and doubt against their competence capacity bore feminism that paved way for their recognition of their works in psychology.
II. Historical data
A. Only 8 out of 3,767 psychology doctorates were awarded to Black candidates between 1920 and 1966 (Hollar, 2003).
B. The formation of the National Council for Women Psychologists (NCWP) by 50 women in the early 40s resulted in the first 240 women accessing psychology studies (Martin, 2018).
III. Today’s data
A. The psychology minority ethnic groups workforce have grown from 8.9 percent to 16.4 percent between 2005 and 2013 (American Psychology Association, 2013).
B. Male psychologists receive $91,000 annual pay while women receive $80,000 per year (Martin, 2018).
IV. Change over time
A. There is a general improvement in acceptance of gender and minority group contribution in psychology.
V. Analysis and conclusion
A. Minority ethnic groups need to be encouraged to pursue psychology.
B. Pay for women should be considered because both genders make equal contributions in the field.
