The Impact of Endocrine Disrupters in Human Health

Abstract

Endocrine disrupters (EDCs) are compounds that occur naturally, or simulated matter that could imitate or get in the way of hormones in the body. Endocrine disrupters could trigger or shut off, or alter signal that are carried by hormones, hence, the possibility of affecting how tissues and organs function. These substances have an adverse effect on human health. Researchers suppose that EDCs could be responsible for increasing the chances of certain diseases that affect the reproduction system in both genders. However, there is no conclusive evidence about it owing to the intricacy of gathering global information on human health. There is also the challenge that comes from using different methods to gather data, thus making it inconclusive.

The exposure to EDC chemicals often leads to development of non-descended testes in juvenile males, prostate cancer in men, breast cancer in women, thyroid cancer, attention deficit/hyperactivity in kids, and developmental problems on the nervous system in kids (World Health Organization). Besides that, they also affect the reproductive system in both men and women. In women, researchers suppose that a high exposure of EDCs through occupational or environmental factors such as pesticides and PCBs can result in impaired fertility and an increased rate of miscarriages (Green Facts). They also believe that EDCs are responsible for endometriosis, considering that it is worsened by oestrogens. As such, they reason that this problem could result from the exposure to dioxins. In men, they believe that an exposure to these harmful substances can lead to low sperm count and quality, as well as abnormalities of male sex organs (Green Facts). In kids, researchers assume that EDCs are the cause for untimely puberty.
